Gem near the zoo

This is sort of a b&b, but without the owner sitting there talking to you and making you a breakfast when you're ready-which is kinda creepy. You can come and go as you please, free breakfast is served from between 7 and 10:30 or so. It's good too, good wheat bread for toast, english muffins, bagels, yogurt, oatmeal, muffins and donuts & 2 kinds of juice and coffee.

They have 2 locations just a few blocks away, the one I stayed at was about 4 minute walk from the Zoo. It was spotless, and you shard a clean homey bathroom with 2 other people--who I never even saw. The rooms were normal sized, and each room had a bookcase full of books and magazines if you got bored, and I even had a candy jar filled with candy in my room. There is a refridgerator available too for your use.

All rooms come with towels, and the bathroom is stocked with baby soaps and shampoos. The staff was extremely ffriendly and helpful, and let me keep my bag there after I checked out and pick it up 5 hrs later. When I first arrived, they walked me to my room, unlocked it, and I walked in on a hot day--the AC was on, the radio was playing lightly and the lights were on--impressive.

This is a great place to stay in DC, and unlike most places in DC it's very affordable. With taxes, my bathroom-less room came to $80/night. It's near the Woodley Park zoo, about a 7 minute walk from the subway station where it takes $1.35 to get downtown. Can't beat it.

Unique Quality: In the afternoon they make up a pitcher of lemonade, and leave it on the kitchen table. When you get home, have a glass or two, and take some cookies from the cookie jar--no charge. They also have a bottle of sherry that is available for your enjoyment too. Hot cider replaces the sherry in winter.

Travelzoo sometimes advertises some good hotel deals in DC. Here is the link: http://hotels.travelzoo.com/washington-dc-hotels/

Also, there is a Hostelling International hostel downtown. Here is the link: http://www.hiwashingtondc.org/. I've never stayed overnight there, but I dropped some friends there and walked in with them--it seemed like a decent hostel and it's very centrally located.

To find out great hostel information check out Hostelling International - hiwashingtondc.org. Some inexpensive B$Bs are the Kalorama Guest House at Woodley Park, DC Vacation Rentals, and Adam's Inn Bed and Breakfast. I would check out Bed and Breakfast accommodations, bedandbreakfastdc.com, to get the rates.
