More about Lombardy Hotel

Very Quaint Little Spot

by TripAdvisor Member kimmyfromar

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Lombardy and had a great experience. It is a quaint little hotel in a quiet area, but close to the Metro so we saw all of the sites without a problem. The building is old, so it is not equipped with the bells and whistles of a new hotel. The service was great, the staff was very friendly and helpful and we had a wonderful experience. We would recommend Lombardy for a change of pace from the super stops. There is an elevator attendant and only a few floors, so never a wait to get to the room. It was clean and nice, bed was comfortable, and a great view! A great value and a unique experience.

Unacceptable for business travel

by A TripAdvisor Member

Hotel Lombardi is an old apartment building that was converted for hotel use.
The service is courteous, but inefficient. It is very dirty; the rooms did not see the vacuum in ages. The carpets are stained and in desperate need of change. The bathrooms and toilets are in disrepair and very noisy. The yellow dingy ring around sink could be removed if housekeeping tried to use appropriate detergent. Cleanliness doesn’t seem to be a priority here.
There was an attempt to achieve certain decor, but it failed also. The furniture is super old (not antique), tired and dirty. My room had a cracked TV, alarm clock that did not work.
Wake up calls were not timely either, both times half an hour late.
The hotel Lombardy is not a good value for what it delivers and is simply not acceptable for business travel.
I would imagine that with a serious cleaning it could be passable.

Excellent Stay!

by TripAdvisor Member MissionTravel

We stayed at the Hotel Lombardy in August 2005 and found the hotel to be extremely charming -it was like taking a trip to Europe. After reading some of the bad reviews, I called the hotel and requested a room towards the front of the building "with a view". To our delight, we were placed on the 11th floor in a suite! The room was very spacious and kept plenty cool - AC & a fan over the bed. The staff is very helpful and curteous - always carrying our luggage, opening doors, and ready to answer questions. We even called down one night b/c we had bought ice cream at a nearby CVS and needed spoons - they kindly brought them to us wrapped in a napkin - free of charge. Each night we returned to the beds turned down with chocolates on the pillow - we thought this was a real delight. The rooms were always very clean. Overall a great stay - a perfect location between the 2 metro locations & all the sites and a great place to relax after a busy day and night!

Not up to expectations

by TripAdvisor Member atltripper

We spent 2 nights at the Lombardy in February. I was very disappointed with the room. The carpet was stained and old; the venetian blinds were broken, and the room smelled of old cigarette smoke. We were 3 doors down the hall from the old-fashioned elevator, and it made a terrible racket---and the use began at 6AM (on a weekend morning!)
On the plus side, the staff was friendly, multi-national and multi-lingual.
I would not stay there again, however, and I felt we did not get our money's worth.

No service, hotel needs repair desperately

by A TripAdvisor Member

There is no service in this hotel. Horrible rooms with barely running AC, right next door to the loading dock of another building.

The hotel needs to buy some lightbulbs and light up the dining rooms, stairs etc. Another needed item is bedsheets and equipment to clean them.

In my opinion, this hotel should be shut down until the a/c units etc are fixed. Horrible! Stay away.

The good review made me choose it, these must be fixed!

1. A torned rubber band and previous guest's luggage tag found in the middle of the floor. Much bread crumbs between a coffee table and a couch. Housekeeping obviously did not vaccum. Rubber band was gone but luggage tag and crumbs stayed whole time. Kitchenett trash was collected only every other day.

2. If your room is facing the back, expect to be waken at 4 and 5am by trash collecting trucks.

3. Bathtub drains slow. By the time you finish showering the water is several inches deep. Takes 20-30 mins to completely drained. Shower curtain was very moldy.

4. Parsimony with bathroom amenities. We stayed for 5 nights. Body soap was given twice, shampoo once and body lotion once. Had to use our own supplies.

5. Room phones were out. Were fixed right away but were broken again.

6. Black lumpy dust was expelled from AC and landed on the bed. Playing with AC because it was not cool enough resulted the breaker to go up.

7. Horrible valet parking. We had a rental car for 2 days. First day, it took 25-30 mins to bring our car. The second day, it took 20 mins to locate our car, was not in a garage, was parked across from the hotel entrance overnight and which happened to be in front of a fire hydrant. A parking violation ticket was on the windshield. The car key bellboy handed was a wrong one. It took a while to find the right key. Then the right car key had an extra attachment - somebody else's house key! Two days later, upon our check-out, the front desk finally took the responsibility for the parking ticket. We will observe whether the hotel really take care of it.

Enough reasons not to go back.
Great location. The hotel is under renovation.

Great for visiting DC

by TripAdvisor Member Indiekid

This is a friendly old style city hotel, currently undergoing refurbishment. We got a room which had been refurbished and was clean and spacious - it had a separate dining/kitchen and a bathroom with an external window. The hallway was sheeted off and dusty due to the refurb, but was not really a problem. The elevators are quaint and manually-operated. The hotels location is walking distance (4 blocks) from the Whithouse and the Lincoln Memorial, and there is a regular bus from opposite the hotel to the Capitol and Smithsonian. For dining, there is plently of choice around the hotel, and Georgetown is a short bus ride away.

Better than expected

by TripAdvisor Member GWTraveler54

The location is excellent for visitors to George Washington University. I was a bit nervous after reading some of the negative reviews here but I was delighted when we got there - it was nicer than I expected. We were on the 11th floor so any street noise was not a problem. Besides the bedroom and bathroom, our room had a sitting area with refrigerator and sink.

Far from ideal

by A TripAdvisor Member

What a disaster. First and last time. Plus side: Nice staff. Now for downers. Elevator's quaint but when door opened to my floor, we were at least a foot below floor level. Bellman says "that's as high as it will go." Once we climb out of the elevator, I see debris all over hall carpet (no cleaning?!). Lamp in my room wouldn't turn on. Carpet was sadly deteriorated, stained, and bunched. No hair dryer. Noisy beyond compare -- squeaking and creaking elevator beside room, shouting workers in hall in early hours of morning, jack hammering in early hours from nearby room repairs (by that time I started laughing). Dark and creepy. No thanks.

Help. with Hotels!!

by oliviasoma1

Going to DC in June and want a hotel on the edge of DC (such as Alexandria) that has a pool and is walking distance from the metro into DC...any suggestions??

Re: Help. with Hotels!!

We stayed at the Hampton Inn and Suites Reagan National Airport Hotel, in Crystal City (Arlington) and right across the street from the metro station. It was a great spot for us and very easy to go to and from DC on the metro. Were were in DC in minutes. Also, very clean and comfortable. The pool is indoors. You can check out the website for more info, but it worked very well for our 5 days in DC.

Thanks...was it very noisy? Also, are there places to eat in walking distance? Did they charge for parking?

There are at least 7 hotels within a short walk of the King Street station in Alexandria; note that this station is also quite close to the (separate) Amtrak station, in case you want to arrive by train instead of car or air.

I looked at the first hotel - Hilton Alexandria Old Town - and not only is it a Hilton, but it claims to have an indoor pool. I leave it to you to find other hotels (use the address of 1900 King Street, Alexandria, Virginia, as the location of the Metro station).

Note that despite the name, the Hilton Alexandria Old Town is not actually in Old Town...the western edge of Old Town is about a quarter mile to the east...not a big deal, but I wanted you to know that the hotel is in a gentrified (i.e., rebuilt) area, not in the original old town.

I believe that both the Blue and Yellow lines run through the King Street station - they take 2 different routes into DC - both very convenient...

It was quiet, we never heard any noise. Also, across the street, above the metro station, there is a mall with lots of eating establishments. The hotel does serve breakfast.

Re: Help. with Hotels!!

Yep, the Arlington location near the airport above and the Alexandria location near the King Street station are both conveniently located near by Metro stops and other transportation (the airport in one case and the Amtrak station in the other).

Differences? The Arlington location is is an area of modern glass office buildings (hence the name, Crystal City). There is an upscale mall nearby (my mother-in-law goes there for her I-Mac classes), and other shopping in the area. And you could hardly be closer to the airport.

On the other hand, while the Alexandria location is in a nicely renovated part of town, it's a 10-15 minute walk to the edge of Old Town...so, no upscale shopping (although there is a new full-service Whole Foods on King Street - how gentrified is that?), but the original old town with narrow streets and plenty of places to eat. The Alexandria location is also farther away from DC from rail (on the same line), not that you would really notice.

So, you've got some good choices, depending on what you want...in any case, the prices in Virginia tend to be a little cheaper than Maryland, so you're on the "right" side of the river ;-)

My husband and me stayed this year in August for two overnights in this hotel and we were very satisfied with everything, but mostky nwith the position of the hotel as for example the Lincoln memorial, the White house but also Georgetwon are within comfortable walking distance and most of the other best known monuments and buildings to see are easily reachable if not walking, then with public transport. The price was also quite reasonable.
