D.C.
The most fascinating thing about D.C. for me was being able to see the White House in person! Also Arlington Cemetary is very moving! The Smithsonians are great also! A great place to go visit, I want to return! Everything!

While traveling in other cities, I have found with great displeasure that I have to pay for what I take for granted as being free. The Smithsonian Institute museums in Washington DC are free to domestic and international travelers. Most museums are open daily, 10am-5:30pm and closed on December 25.
They have so much to offer everyone from everywhere of every age. This is a list of their wonderful museums:
African Art Museum
Air and Space Museum and Udvar-Hazy Center
American Art Museum (Closed for renovation)
American History Museum
American Indian Museum on the Mall
Anacostia Museum (African American History and Culture)
Freer and Sackler Galleries (Asian art)
Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (modern and contemporary art)
National Zoo
Natural History Museum
Portrait Gallery (Closed for renovation)
Postal Museum
Renwick Gallery (American crafts)
Smithsonian Institution Building, the Castle (visitor information)
So go wild and visit as many of the museums as you can. I am certain that you will be quite busy with the exhibits in Washington DC!!! Visit their website for more detailed information www.si.edu. My favorite reason for visiting the museums is that it reminds me of my childhood. Since it was so close to our schools, we always made yearly trips to see the museums downtown. I attended college nearby as well and had the wonderful opportunity to go to them as part of my curriculm. These museums have always been a part of my life and I hope they bring knowledge, enlightenment, and joy to yours.
See the Capitol, the Washington Monument, Abraham Lincoln, and Jefferson Memorial and of course the White house. They are all within the same area, so you could book a guided tour. There's not one best memory. What i liked were all the sights together, the museums, and...surprisingly, they're all free....
I remember this one man working as a guide in the Old Senate Chamber of the Capitol. He used to be a soldier in Germany and explained everything in german..that was very kind
The Lincoln Memorial at night is exceptionally moving, even though it was crowded with school tours. You can see the reflection of the Washington Monument in the reflecting pool in between the two monuments and it's quite breathtaking. Seeing the Hope Diamond at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History is a highlight, as is the original Star Spanged Banner at the Museum of American History.
All the Smithsonian museums, the monuments, the White house and almost anything else you could want to do in Washington is free! However, for some of the more popular places like the White House you need to get a timed pass which you have to stand in line for that day. We got in line at 7am and the line was already huge, so make sure you get there early to ensure you get tickets.
