Thursday night Comedy show

The valet parking is very expensive

Unique Quality: though not listed on their website, they have a free standup comedy show on Thursday nights downstairs on the lower level. We had a great time watching these local DC-area comics--some were hysterical.
They didn't have any waiters in the show room so you have to fetch your own drinks, but for a free show I can't complain

Great boutique hotel near Dupont Circle!

Topaz Hotel (along with most of the other boutique hotels managed by the Kimpton Group) has a very distinct style, which encourages you to really RELAX and attain this kind of nirvana-like state. From the minute you walk in, you hear meditation music playing, and everyone is cheery. Quite impressive.

Our room was really gorgeous, modern and spotless. Since we brought our dog with us, he was happy to find that they had even brought up two new dog bowls for him to use while we were there!

In the mornings, they had a continental breakfast buffet in the lobby lounge (not included with the room, though), as well as complimentary energy/fruit drinks.

I really can't say enough about this hotel... I'd definitely choose to stay here again, or perhaps try one of the other Kimpton hotels in the area.

Clean, Comfortable, Quiet Rooms @ a Good Price

by TripAdvisor Member LisleFamilyof4

We stayed at the Topaz Hotel with our 11 and 9 year olds the last week of March 2004 (Spring Break Weekend). The hotel is situated in a nice, safe neighborhood very close to the DuPont Circle and Farragut Metro stops. The rooms at the hotel are average size, the beds were extremely comfortable, and the room (including the bathroom) were very clean. A very quiet hotel as well, we never heard our nieghbors or people in the hallway. With a AAA discount, we saved about $50 per night, and valet parking at the hotel, which is normally $21/night, was also free with AAA membership - an incredible deal. Our room rate for 7 days was $129/night. Try to stay at least the 4th floor or higher to get away from the smoke and noise of the bar area - call ahead and make sure they know your smoking preference and what floor you want to be in - they did honor our requests. The staff is friendly but small, and the overall service was just OK.

It is about a 15-20 minute walk to the White House, and its a decent 40 minute walk to get to the Smithsonian campus, so taking the Metro is the way to go.

Overall, a safe, clean, quiet hotel with a discounted rates - well worth staying in.

The Topaz is Very Good

by TripAdvisor Member Dan77754

The Topaz is a very good hotel. The beds are incredibly comfortable and the bathroom amenities are outstanding. The tea kettle was an added bonus as was the CD player. The staff are amazingly friendly for Washinton D.C. It is about a 15 minute walk to the closest metro stop. All in all, this is a nice hotel to stay at and I would wholeheartedly recommend it.

My experience...

by A TripAdvisor Member

This is a cute hotel in a great neighborhood, the room is very comfortable.
I spent a weekend in April 2004. I booked and paid through Expedia.com, great rate ($139/night). I checked in late on Friday night, the reservation was not hold, I booked 2 Q size beds non-smoking room and got a K bed. The only alternative to change was a Q room on a smoking floor. I placed an order of 2 breakfasts as room service and got Lipton tea that had coffee flavor served with a cracked coffee cup, no spoon. However the staff was helpful.

Good experience, but not a calm oasis

by TripAdvisor Member KH_RWC

Based on the good reviews at this site, we stayed here a few weeks ago. This boutique hotel was everything promised, inexpensive, colorfully decorated and conveniently located, but it is not the oasis of calm that it advertises to be, at least not in the lobby. The lobby bar appears to be a popular night spot, and on the Saturday night we checked it it was thumping and smoky and crowded. Luckily, none of this commotion could be heard from our room on the 6th floor, which was huge and extremely quiet. One other warning--if you are the type of traveler who expects a large elegant lobby, fast elevators, and 24x7 bell and conciege services, stay at a Marriott or Hilton instead. The staff was friendly and pleasant, but rarely was there more than one person behind the desk in the small but cute lobby.
