Take a drive around the island, and explore the beautiful inland scenery also. We were amazed at the lush but bucolic landscape and how many little farms and homesteads were there. No (or at least we didn't see them) subdivisions! The island is very manageable to drive around, with services at both ends (Roche Harbor and Friday Harbor). Most enjoyable! The view of False Bay from our little guest house, Wigeon's Rest (companion guest house to another called Water's Edge) was amazing... and sooooo peaceful. I have never been so relaxed.
A glass of water
by Toughluck
Because the San Juan Islands have no natural water source for fresh water, all drinking water is hauled in from the mainland. A local custom has developed from this of not providing a glass of water during your meal. If you would like a glass of water, all you need do is ask, but since many don't drink the water put in front of them, the islanders have learned not to waste it. But they'll gladly get you a some if you just ask.
Pelindaba Lavendar Farms
by paulscuba
This is a very fragrant lavendar farm. They have many lavendar products and some plants that can be purchased. We were visiting a little early in the season so they didn't have tours running. The farm tours don't start until approx. the 2nd week of July and not sure when they stop running them. If you are going later in August you can always check with them.
A Great Little Town

"Cute place to visit"
I visited Friday Harbor in the summer of 2006. It was a great town with almost a New England feel to it. The harbor is beautiful, but check out the surrounding areas. The nature is gorgeous on the entire island. The ferry ride is fun, too!
Bus Tour by Ferry
by grandmaR
We took the bus to Anacortes starting way early in the morning. There, the bus got on the ferry which went first to Friday Harbor. We didn't have time to get off the ferry, so I saw almost nothing of Friday Harbor. From here we went to British Columbia, landing near Butchart Gardens
The pictures I have of this trip are prints, and this is one of my first attempts to digitize them by taking photos with a digital camera. Because they are glossy prints it is hard to avoid reflections.
