Travel Tips for Ocean Park

Surfside Golf club

by Segolily

This was a nice golf course well cared for and planned out.
From their ad:
Near the north end of the Long Beach Peninsula lies "The Washington Coast's best kept secret." Surfside Golf Course winds through coastal pines with ocean breezes and sounds of crashing surf. The well-manicured tees, fairways and greens add to the enjoyment of your round of golf. Inexpensive green fees in a quiet coastal community. Four sets of tees will accommodate golfers of any skill level, from the shortest tee playing at 2702 yards-par 36 to the back tees at 3206 yards-par 36.

Ledbetter Point

by Segolily

The very northern tip of Long Beach Peninsula is set aside as Ledbetter Point State Park and Willapa Bay Natl Wildlife Refuge. It is mostly inaccessible, there are some walking paths through the trees to the mudflats where you might catch sight of migrating birds and some areas are closed during sensitive bird nesting times. I shared my visit with a group from Portland's Audubon Society, though they were mostly discussing the difference between a western and california gull...must have been a slow bird day.
"...the point’s appearance changes constantly as dunes shift, become stabilized or erode away. The Peninsula is in its geologic “youth” at Leadbetter Point, where it still continues to grow. Picturesque sand dunes support stands of beach grass, lupine, wild strawberry, sand verbena, sea rocket and beach pea. Potholes created by the wind between the dunes fill with winter rains and support willow and marsh plants. A salt marsh of pickleweed and arrowgrass on the bay side of the point is flooded and drained twice daily with the movement of the tides. Biologists have recorded over 100 species of birds here."

It was great, Who knew?

"Founded in 1883"

Ocean Park began as a Christian revival/summer resort center. There is still a Methodist camp nearby. It is a small town, but has a lot of character quite distinct from its neighbors. It has all you need for a weeks getaway or more.

"Home of the Beach Baron's Hot Rod club"

We were able to enjoy the great old souped up cars entered in the car show which takes place the weekend after Labor Day. I can't tell you how many cars ended up coming the year we were there, but there were more than I could look at I can tell you that. The cars cruise the peninsula's main road and people sit by the side and watch the constant parade. The main show is at the club's field in Ocean Park for two days. It was a lot of fun even if you know nothing about cars.

"A little beach, a little bay"

Situated between the ocean and Willapa Bay you get a lot of maritime influence. Oysters and clams are caught and served locally. Shipwrecks are documented, glass floats are ubiquitous, residents know the difference between razor and horse clams

AvaTara's Ocean Park Page

by AvaTara

Ocean Park on the Washington state peninsula has big deserted beaches where you can find the most beautiful things like shells and stuff falling of from boats passing by. I've got some nice floats hanging in my garden. And several sanddollars; I've had never seen those before in my life.
