seattle in december

by ek1204

hi! my friends are thinking of planning a trip to Seattle
mid-December(after finals). We don't mind the cold but worried about the rain.
can anyone tell me if the rain in December is heavy or light rain? Also, if
it has heavy rain in December, will it stop us from being able to walk/explore the city??

It generally doesn't rain hard and it doesn't rain all the time. However, it does rain often and it rains every day, pretty much.
All you need is a hooded sweatshirt or jacket to get around, and you should be fine for walking.

It's more of a drizzle than a rain. I'm from vancouver, and i can only remember snow in a handful of Decemebers. I't not that cold.

People who live there say "if you don't like the weather, just wait 10 min and it will change"; which has been my experience. They also say, "people who live in Seattle don't tan they rust."

As to weather it prevents you from seeing the city or not, that depends entirely on how well you tolerate the type of weather that is happening.

As said above, generally it doesn't rain that hard, but every once in a while it does. You can solve this problem by ducking into some place of shelter for a little while and wait it out, as it is highly unusual and usually doesn't last that long when it does happen.

A lot also depends on how heavy the wind is that day. A cold wind can really make the rain seem quite bad even if it isn't very heavy.

My usual approach to Seattle has been to see what the weather is like in the morning. If it looks good, then I plan to do something outside, if the weather looks bad, then I reserve that day for the many things that are indoor activities (museums, art galleries, etc.). So far, that method has meant that I have visited very few of Seattle's museums, as none of the weather events during any of my visits seemed that bad to me. However, I also seem to have great fortune with the weather there when I visit.

Also, as far as I am concerned, the clouds that happen in December make for much more interesting photos than what you would be able to do on a completely clear day.

It's hot weather that brings the torrential rains. In winter it's more or a drizzle, altho constant or frequent. As it was already stated, just wear a hooded coat & the rain won't prevent you from getting around. I just wear a jacket & a bucket hat & the rain doesn't keep me from anything.

Tourist: It's been raining ever since I got here. When do you have summer?

Local: Well, that's kind of hard to tell. Last time it was on a Thursday.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your feedback! The light rain and the cold doesn't
really bother me. I was just worried that heavy rain can prevent me from going outside. Thanks, and I can't wait to visit seattle in december!!!

We go outside here no matter what the weather. You will see people running outside when the wind is blowing so hard it is raining sideways. Just bring good rain gear and a sense of humor.

Travel Tips for Seattle

not so racially diverse.

by cachaseiro

seattle is not very racially diverse when compared to other US cities.
for a european it's still quite multicultural though and you don't need to worry that it's all beavis and butthead there.
as the photo shows there are some racially mixed hot chicks to be found there too :O) hot chicks.

You must go to the downtown...

by butte

You must go to the downtown piers and in and around where the aquarium is. There is a lot of shops, restaurants, baseball and football teams that play around there. My fondest memory of Seattle is just talking in the sights. It's just amazing looking at the arcitecture.

a way of making you feel like you're home: friends

by richiecdisc

We had come to Seattle from Mount Rainier National Park where heavy winter snow accumulation and late snow melt combined to thwart our best efforts to return to the wilderness. We managed only one night backpacking and left the park with our tails between our legs. The plan now was to soothe our bruised egos in Seattle and march into Olympic National Park ready to conquer. All we needed was a comfortable place from which to do it all. A cheap motel would do in a pinch but really there's no place like home.

The words “feel free” were uttered matter-of-factly and there was no doubt of their sincerity. For three days we did just that, soaking up Seattle's caffeine infused culture, sampling the city's fine brews, and getting reacquainted with friends over many great meals.

Olympic called us and with rejuvenated souls we went there to topple all that we had done so far in the backpacking world. It would have been hard to leave if we were not going home. It may not have been our real home but real friends have a way of making you feel that way and in Seattle, we know we have just that.

Earthquake

Missing the earthquake. I was in Colorado on a business trip (the story of my life), and I missed the earthquake that hit Seattle in February, 2001. Luckily, this was pretty much the extent of the damage in my apartment:

The BEST UW Coffee

by zoegoddess

So you are from out of town and you are visiting the lovely University of Washington Seattle campus, but where to go for some great coffee? Definitely skip the Tully's scattered around in campus buildings and go to the little independent coffee spots instead. My suggestions:

*Design Coffee in Gould Hall (across the street from the "main campus" area, located on 15th NE & 40th) serves wonderfully smooth coffee by Caffe Vita and the baristas are very friendly. Not sure what hours are during fall-spring. This coffee shop has been run by the Architecture program for over 20 years and prides itself on being independent from the UW's Housing and Food services...and net profits also go towards funding lectures and other programs for the school.

*Parnassus Cafe & Art Gallery located in the basement of the Art building (northern part of the Quad). Not only is this place run by students, but the net profits go TO students in the art department in the form of fabulous scholarships. Open (fall-spring) Mon-Thur 8:15am - 4pm, Friday 8:15am - 2pm.

TA DA! Two of my favorite coffee joints on campus. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did. Oh, and try to tip generously because most students tend to skimp...ya know, college is already expensive enough. :-)
