The horror, the horror
I knew it was risky. I did not make my Phoenix-Portland flight, so routed myself through Seattle; trouble was, the connecting flight left 15 minutes after scheduled arrival from Phoenix.
Battling headwinds (and how exactly does a 737-400 "battle" headwinds??), I arrived 5 minutes after the last Portland flight of the night left.
Finding my way to the hotel telephone banks, I tried familiar names -- Marriott, Holiday Inn Express. Nothing. 11:30 I was reduced to second (or third) tier options.
I called a place called Concourse Inn -- and was told to catch the shuttle "with the American flag and name Jet Motel".
Arriving at a pretty battered building, there was a US Airways crew and New Zealand vagabond ahead of me in line. It took about 20 minutes to get registered and be given a key.
I arrived in the room to find it was just as shabby as the lobby. Given that I was most interested in a bed, I inspected the sheets -- they seemed clean -- and caught 5 hours of sleep before departing early the next day.
