Venetian Wall (art: part of Bridge of Glass)
by glabah
Generally, the walls and fences used on pedestrian bridges over highways and railroad lines are very utilitiarian, and fairly unattractive.
One of the few exceptions to this has to be the Venetial Wall, which was created in 2002 as part of the Chihuly Bridge of Glass that connects the Tacoma Museum of Glass and the waterfront trail to downtown Tacoma. These two walls are used as outdoor display cases of various glass art objects, and you will most certainly find people stopped here, looking carefully at the various works on display inside the glass wall.
At night, the cases are lit up, giving another dimension to the artwork on display inside the glass wall.
Look carefully at these photographs, and you will see that these works are of very impressive size, and larger than the detail photograph makes them appear.
The web site below is for the artist that designed the artwork for the bridge, and for a bit more information about the basics of the bridge please see my Chihuly Bridge of Glass tip.
Point Defiance Park: Go Karts and Other Amusements
by glabah
While it is far from a full amusement park, the privately operated facility is basically operated as a small piece of Point Defiance Park. The facility at Point Defiance Park offers Go-Karts, Batting Cages and Miniature Golf.
The current concession operator is called "TNT Family Go-Karts" though it has a partnership with a related facility in Port Orchard.
Specials on the Go-Karts are offered regularly.
The facility is open daily in the summer months, Friday, Saturday and Sundays in the spring, and weekend only during the winter months.
How to Get Here: Highway 16 to 163 going north to Vashon Island Ferry Terminal. At the five way stop sign at 54th and Pearl Street, the Go-Kart track and facility is located on the northeast side. The official address is 5400 N. Pearl Street, but the driveway is a little convoluted to get to from the main road. Follow the instructions on the sign at the intersection (see photo) and the rest of the signs that will show you the way. The nearest bus routes are Pierce County Transit #10 and #11 to the ferry.
Theatre Square
by glabah
Pierce Transit operates a small bus layover facility in downtown Tacoma, connected to several parking lots and a few other facilities. It was built to compliment the downtown area, and therefore a plaza was constructed on top of all these facilities.
As this plaza is located right next door to several of Tacoma's major theatres, naturally it would be called "Theatre Square". There is a fairly extensive fountain, several sculptures, and open grass with a few scattered park benches. There are a fair number of medium sized trees with various low growing shrubs as well.
Some of the sculptures and other artwork in the park are fairly hidden, and it takes some time to discover, for example, the theatre masks on the upper level of the park on the walkway connecting the plaza to a parking garage.
Also be sure to check the wall on the building on the south side of the plaza: it is all one very large mural that helps add depth to the plaza.
The plaza is located just south of the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts, between Commerce Street and Broadway. It is surrounded by buildings but is approximately where 10th Street would intersect these streets if it were a through street.
