Travel Tips for Charleston

Harry M. Brawley Walkway & Slack Plaza

by Stephen-KarenConn

The Harry M. Brawley Walkway, named for a Charleston historian, is a landscaped linier city park, about 3 blocks long, running from Capitol Street to Court Street, and connecting the main downtown area with Charleston Town Center Mall. It broadens between Summer & Laidley Streets to become Slack Plaza, named for a former West Virginia Congressman. This is obviously a popular local gathering place as I saw numerous Charlestonians out enjoying the beautiful springtime weather here.

West Virginia Zero Milestone

by Stephen-KarenConn

Directly across Kanawha Boulevard from the State Capitol, and overlooking the Kanawha River, is this stone marker designating Mile Zero, the spot from which mileposts along West Virginia highways are marked throughout the state. The marker was first set in 1934, then removed from the capitol grounds in 1938 due to municipal street construction. It was reset at its present location in 1956.

The Mystery Hole, near Hawks...

by tb55

The Mystery Hole, near Hawks Nest State Park along U.S. 60 in Fayette County. Mostly open during warm-weather months. If you plan a trip to see the New River Bridge or to do any white water rafting, a sidetrip to the Mystery Hole is a must. You can't miss it. It's the building with a VW Beatle jutting out from the side and a gorilla on top.

Statues on the Capitol Complex Grounds

by mikelisaanna

There are a number of interesting statues located around the grounds of West Virginia's state capitol complex. These include statues of Abraham Lincoln, who was President of the US when West Virginia gained independence from Virginia, and Stonewall Jackson, the Confederate Civil War general, who was born in the area. Other statues include a mountaineer and a coal miner, two iconic symbols of West Virginia's citizens.

Monument to Booker T. Washington

by Stephen-KarenConn

Booker T. Washington, a famous black educator, spent his early life in Malden, near Charleston, West Virginia. In 1881 Washington established the first vocational school for African-Americans in Tuskegee, Alabama. Today the school is known as Tuskegee University. Sculptor Bill Hopen of Sutton, West Virginia, created the likeness which was erected here in 1985.
