Clarksburg
This was the view from my dad's old house. Overlooking Clarksburg.
View up the hill from my dad's old house.. Some of the homes are deteriorating however there are some that are still well kept.. real estate here is dirt cheap...and the area really isn't that bad.... West Virginia is one of America's best kept secrets..
I just happen to like this picture of my kids sitting in front of my father's old house. To me this picture kind of symbolizes Clarksburg... Struggling to survive...At the turn of the century Clarksburg was prospering...Now 100 years later it's fighting for it's life..Still a livable town though... Many of the younger people leave.. I did.. I couldn't imagine trying to raise my kids there... Clarksburg would be a nice inexpensive place to find a livable home.. If you wanted to retire or didn't have to worry about raising kids..It's just a 2 hours drive via the Interstate to Pittsburgh,5 Hours to Washington D.C. About 4 hours to Cleveland maybe 3 to Charleston.. Only Minutes to Fairmont and Morgantown..A nice place to escape the rat race but still have the rat race accessible if you ever needed it....
This was the view from the back of my dad's house of a part of Lowndes Hill.. We were pretty far up the hill.. The steepness really can't be photographed.. people on this hill really develop strong legs.. Perhaps Coach Rodriguez at WVU could come here to find a fullback...All these kids have incredibly strong legs...I actually think I took this pic in the 70's .. It hasn't changed much...
Again this was taken in the 70's with a Polaroid camera. It is the roads leading up to the top of Lowndes Hill.. It is a fun little drive.. especially for Floridians who aren't use to these tricky mountain roads..
Main Street from Goff Plaza.. There are some nice historical homes in this area.. Besides General Stonewall Jackson..Clarksburg was the birthplace of Cyrus Vance, Secretary of State during the Carter administration. Which house he grew up in or was born.. I couldn't tell you.. I think it is some kind of secret.. All I know it use to be on the sign welcoming you to Clarksburg.. The sign by Minard's..There is a little plaque in downtown Clarksburg commemorating the Birthplace of Stonewall Jackson and a real nice statue of him at the courthouse.. I am not sure when this pic was taken. It doesn't matter though ..I am sure it hasn't changed much..
This is the Welcome to Clarksburg Sign Out By Minards.. Besides Cyrus Vance and Stonewall Jackson It was also the home of Author.. Davis Grubb... and Frank Loria the Virginia Tech All-American in the 60's.whose life came to a tragic end in the Marshall University football team Airplane Crash in the late 60's.. and opera star Phyllis Curtain..
"Empire Bank Building"
This one was taken in the early 90's .. It use to be so much fun and great exercise growing up in Clarksburg. My father never had a car.. Didn't need one.. The high school was half way down the hill .. my dad's work was at the bottom of the hill which was downtown... This was my wife and little daughter who is 16 now.. Again we were visiting from Tampa.. We use to walk.. everywhere.. after a couple of days we usually went somewhere else..because the kids were always restless. and we quickly ran out of interesting things to do.. I have to say with all that walking especially back up the hill.. I grew up in pretty good shape..My father was and is still in excellent shape because remember...If you walk down the hill ..you always have to walk back up.. and there really just no way to describe the steepness of the hills heading up to Lowndes Hill. You really have to drive or walk them first.. and they will take your Breath away..The first time..Like the Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls.. Just can't photograph some things..
