More about Blackwater Falls State Park Lodge

New River Gorge

by iluvtrvl

The New River is not new at all. It is one of the oldest rivers in the nation, and a national river. It is considered the best whitewater river in the eastern US, and offers an excellent venue for hiking, mountain climbing, horseback riding as well.

Other key sites to see are Dolly Sods Wilderness area, Seneca rocks and caverns, Blackwater Falls, Hawks Nest. If you are a skier, you will find Snowshoe Mountain an excellent spot for eastern skiing December through March.

Blackwater Falls State Park

by counsel14

Blackwater Falls State Park is named for the falls of the Blackwater River. The river plunges five stories then twists through an eight-mile long gorge. The "black" water is because of the tannic acid in fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. A park ranger said these falls are the most photographed in West Virginia. I know I took a heck of a lot of pictures of them before I thought I had "captured" them.

There are many things to do at the park, whether you're there in summer or winter. You can hike, camp, raft, boat, swim, go snow skiing, sledding, fishing, or just go through the Nature center and learn about the indigenous plants and animals of the area.

There's a conference center, pools, a restaurant, picnic shelters, gift shops. most everything you could imagine. You can spend the night in the lodge, a cabin or at a campsite for tents.

Cass Scenic Railroad

by iluvtrvl

Cass is a small town, located in the eastern portion of West Virginia. It thrived on the native timer as an industry, using a steam-powered engine pulling cars that brought the timber from the mountain, where it could be shipped onto other destinations by rail.

Not much is in Cass, but if it is scenery that makes your vacation complete, this part of the state is for you.

Other activities close by include the Greenbank Radio Observatory at Greenbank, WV, Blackwater Falls State Park, Seneca Rocks and Caverns, Snowshoe Ski Resort (lovely in the summertime too!) and many other off the beaten path locations that will help you understand why West Virginia's is referred to as "Almost Heaven".

Blackwater Falls State Park

Blackwater falls is one of the signature landmarks in the state of West Virginia, and for good reason. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls you will find anywhere. The Blackwater River and Falls gets its name from the dark amber-colored water which is the result of staining from fallen spruce and hemlock trees. At the falls the river plunges and cascades about 50 feet, before twisting and winding its way for eight miles through a picturesque canyon.

The falls is surrounded by a State Park with a modern 54 room lodge, rental cabins, a campground, restaurant, indoor swimming pool, two gift shops, and picnic shelters. Hiking trails lead to two other waterfalls, Pendleton Falls and Elakala Falls, both within a half mile of the lodge. There are also several scenic overlooks along the gorge of the Blackwater River.

Hi Glenn.

WV is a wonderful place to visit. Last Fall we took our church youth group to Seneca Rocks. It's a very easy hike with a rewarding view at the top. I got some of the most amazing pictures that day. The fall colors were stunning!

Dolly Sods is also in that area. I don't know anything about hiking trails but I would think that you could do a search and get some info on Dolly Sods.

Also nearby is Blackwater Falls where I know there are some very easy hiking trails.

Coopers Rock State forest is amazing. Some of the best spots are the overlook (Coopers Rock), Henry Clays Iron Furnace, Rock City, and also Ravens rock (even though Ravens Rock has since broken off and fallen down the mountain!).
