    Great small Beach hotel

    by

Stopped in Algoma on a genealogical trip. This motel was very clean and staff very helpful. We had a lakeside room. Enjoyed being on the balcony and taking in the views of Lake Michigan. A continental breakfast is offered. Charcoal grills are available for use by the guests. A short walk takes you to a McDonalds/convenience store. I would recommend this hotel, as I would stay there again.

Unique Quality: Loved the beach access. It was close to the von Steihl Winery and downtown Algoma. Just past the motel-heading out of town- was a very unique garden centre called The Flying Pig, unexpected to find such a store that has fantastic coffee.. highly recommend a stop by this store. Great gifts, unique garden sculptures.. great place.

Czech Blahnik's new world

"The little town where they began"

The Blahnik's settled here in Algoma , WI after immigrating from the Czech Republic. While here we stayed at a small hotel called the Algoma Beach Hotel. A very small hotel located on Lake Michigan. Beautiful views of the lake from our room. Great service. While here, we visited various areas and spent time with the Dorothy. It was wonderful to get to know her and perhaps, one day, Mum can see all the genealogy information her husband had collected over the years. It was nice to hear about the land set aside for Blahnik Park. Great little town with small town shopping.

"The Flying Pig"

You've got to go here! Great little shoppe.. garden sculptures, garden centre, eclectic gifts, and THE BEST COFFEE!!!

"vonStiehl Winery"

We made a point to stop at the local winery. the Von Stiehl Winery has been around for 40 years. It is the only winery that I know of that wraps their bottles of Cherry wine in a cast. "von Stiehl still "wraps" some bottles in their distinctive white casts, a brainstorm of Dr. Stiehl who wanted to protect his newly made wines from heat and light while it aged. Wrapping the bottles in white casts, much like he would wrap a broken limb in his medical practice, gave von Stiehl wines a very unique look." (von Stiehl winery website http://www.tourworx.com/vrtours/vonStiehl/slide.html)
Gives the bottles quite a unique look!
Loved the winery and definitely will go again... left a little lighter in the wallet from there :)
