The Big Apple(ton)
Part of the Greater Green Bay Packer Country, Appleton is located about an hour and a half north of Milwaukee and half an hour south of Green Bay. Put together with some of the surrounding towns, it is part of the State known as the Fox Valley, or to the locals "The Valley".
Being in the Northeast part of the state, Appleton is also part of the non-specific mystical area of Wisconsin known as "Up North", (or "Up Nor't" depending on the vocabulary of your community) to folks in the Milwaukee area.
Not having any specific starting or ending point in the State, "Up North" is simply anyplace North of your starting point where one would particpate in outdoor activities. Most Wisconsin-ites accept this as destination, and no further explanation is needed.
"What in the World is a Cheese Curd?"
To quote a good friend of mine"
" A cheese curd is an orangish cheese byproduct that feels like Silly Putty but tastes a lot better. It was invented accidentally by UW cheese scientists attempting to create an object of pure cholesterol that would still squeak. Rats who are fed this remarkable food develop an unusual capacity to polka and drink beer."
Many times an quired taste, true and very squeeky cheese curds are easy to come by come by in Appleton. Also found in a deep fried version, they are a must try to experience life to the fullest.....
