"The Legend of the Fountain"
As we walked toward The Riviera, we stopped to admire the beautiful Fountain in front of it. Inquisitive, I wandered over to read the plaque which gave information about the fountain. I discovered that in June of 2004, Lake Geneva celebrated the dedication of "The Driehaus Family Fountain in Riviera Park" This family donated a replica of the New York City [1873] "ANGEL OF THE WATERS FOUNTAIN at Behesda Terrace in Central Park. That fountain was designed by Emma Stebbins.
"The winged female figure at the top of the fountain symbolized the purifying of the city's {New York} water supply when the Croton Aqeduct opened in 1842, bringing fresh water to all New York citizens. Thus, she carries a lily, the symbol of purity in one hand, while with her other hand, she extends outwardly to bless the water below." However, for Mr. Driehaus, the fountain celebrates the history surrounding Lake Geneva. This celebration includes the majestic estates that were designed by the Olmsted Brothers [sons of Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of American landscape architecture, who designed New York's Central Park]. Even without knowing the history of this lovely fountain, one can appreciate its utter beauty and charming addition to The Riviera.
