What to expect in Madison

by fifamac

I am from the Caribbean and I may attending a course in Madison for 2 weeks in early March.
As someone who is accustomed to hot weather and a caribbean lifestyle.

What kind of weather to expect? What kind of clothing preparations should i make.

What is fun to do in MAdison. What is a must see? Is it a nice place to visit, easy to get around?

Respond anyone please.

My friend you may just freeze in Madison, WI at this time of year. Madison is a college town so there will be plenty of places to go, but it will be cold. It is (roughly) currently 23 degrees F. so bundle up.

It might be a little warmer in March - it could be around 50 F during the day. On the other, it also could be snowing. Chances are that if you will be in Madison for two weeks in you will experience some very cold weather.

The University of Wisconsin is one of America's best public universities, and the campus is a real center of activity for the entire region. There is always something going one a the Memorial Student Union - concerts, films, talks. You might also be able to rent recreation equipment at the Student Union. The center of Madison is located on an isthmus between two medium sized lakes, and people enjoy recreating lakeside: you can walk or run, bicycle, rollerblade.

"State Street" is a major pedestrianized thoroughfare that links the university campus with the State Capitol, a large impressive structure which dominates the center of the town. Along State Street are many shops, restaurants and bars - good ethnic food, interesting boutiques and lots of bookstores! There's a movie theater, a concert hall, and an art gallery near the "State Capitol" end of State Street.

Check out Madison goings-on in the local publication "The Isthmus": they have a website at http://www.thedailypage.com/

Travel Tips for Madison

Madison Tip

by holyman

For most part of the year, Madison is covered in snow. There is so much of it that it obscures almost everything else. I remember an adjoining house where the motorbike got covered by snow to an extent that it disappeared under it (see pic)!!

Winter Carnival at UW

by yooperprof

The Winter Carnival at the University of Wisconsin is a celebration of things icy. There's ice golf and ice frisbee, ice broomball and ice fishing. It's held out on frozen Lake Mendota, out beyond the terrace of the Memorial Union.

It's a reflection of this piece of wisdom: if you want to be happy in the upper Midwest, don't reject winter, embrace it!

Wisconsin Governor's Mansion

by latte18

For all the talk of the Wisonsin State Capitol, surely the Wisconsin Governor's Mansion deserves some honorable mentions as well. The mansion is really grand, beautiful and set on a acres of well-kept garden and located alongside the shore of Lake Mendota with unparalled views of downtown Madison. The Governor's Mansion is located in Maple Grove, an upper crust residential area on the shore of Lake Mendota. The area is a pleasant place to visit with its public park and a marina, with excellent views of downtown Madison. Maple Grove is brightly lit by Christmas lights during holiday seasons and is one of the best places to watch Rhythm and Booms, the Midwest's largest 4th of July fireworks show.

Breakfast stop

by mwenn2100 about Monty's Blue Plate Diner

Okay, so I'm partial to awesome breakfast and this place fits the bill. After a night out on the town this is a great place to show up at 2pm and get some great food! :) Breakfast is served all day along with lunch and dinner options. The restaurant appears to be an old fashioned diner, with a sit down counter, tables, booths, outdoor seating, and the ever important bakery display case! The staff is young and fun, the customers are from every walk of life.

The food ranges from traditional to ecclectic (bacon and eggs to a Mediterranean eggs benedict)... all are really good and filling to boot. I've heard the pie is to die for (although I haven't indulged yet). Stop by for a fun atmosphere and great food. Any of the breakfasts

Casual Dining in a Jazzy Theme restaurant

by kimod74 about Hawk's Bar & Grill

Hawk's Bar & Grill is a casual restaurant w/a big bar on one side of the restaurant. Walk up ordering of food & pay for food as you order it. Find a place to sit and they will call your name when your food is ready. If you want tap beer or drinks you have to order and pay for those seperately at the bar.
Jazz theme going on with pictures of Jass musicians on the wall and jazz music playing over the speakers. All in all a nice casual restaurant with a selection of hamburgers, steak burgers or salmon burgers...salads and appetizers are also offered. I had the salmon burger with tangy dill sauce with season curly fries. A decent burger, something different as I have never had a salmon burger that I can remember. The dill sauce was more on the SPICY side than on the tangy side. Ordered a beer from the tap, was a little on the warm side, at least for my taste anyways.
