Wright's "trick" here is the use of the rounded curves of the building to reflect and enhance the natural "circularity" of Lake Monona. FLW was always looking for ways for his buildings to be based in and growing out of their environments. Here, on the shore of a round lake, he devised a conference center that minimizes the use of right angles. For my $0.02 worth, this is another one of his Wisconsin masterpieces. (But the orange carpet in the lobby HAS to go.)
Cross-country ski race around the State capitol. Every year they groom, or truck in massive amounts of snow for cross county ski races around the Capitol Square. Open skiing is also offered when races aren't taking place.
Also ice sculptures, snowboarding area, ski related conferences and such.
Usually MLK weekend.
These photos wer taken in 1/06, right after we had a week of 40F degree temps, and no snow. They trucked in 85 trucks of snow to have it this time. The year prior it was about -10F. warm clothes. Skis if you want to ski. Snowboard if you want to snowboard.
State street is located between the capital and the University. many bars and restraunts and shops that all stay open late into the eve. great for summer time strools and watching street performers. Clothing required!
This restaurant is in our neighborhood but we rarely go there. We stopped going even occasionally when they billed us for sharing an entree. But we read they had a new chef, so we went for a special occasion. My companion encouraged me to try their $16 lamb chop entree with vegetables. The lamb was delicious, but predictably, a tiny portion. I chose their corn chowder, and it was fine. The vegetables were 3 tiny roasted, blackened, peppers, a few thin slices of rather tastless grilled zucchini, and a lot of small unpeeled, tasteless potatoes. I dont think we will be back soon. Service was fine, in itself. My companion had a chicken pannini and had no complaint. We both shared the French fries.
The decor is very pleasant.
If you’re in Wisconsin, you have to have a brat (bratwurst). This is located right on State St. so it’s easy to get to. This, along with the Essen Haus on Wilson St are your best bets for brats. Essen Haus more for German food. Being a vegetarian, I can’t give an accurate portrayal of how they taste, but they usually win 'best of' contests. They also have rather large outdoor patio which allows you to smoke if you need to.
Also a popular place for a beer or two and to watch sporting events on the many tv’s. They even open early when the World Cup is on and televised from Europe so you can go in, have a beer (students do) and watch the football match. Go USA!
For real good bratwurst, go to Milwaukee. But this is ok for Madison. The Red Brats are their signature dish. Try one with a beer.
I haven't been here in a while, but I bet they have deep-fried cheese curds too, try them.
