Travel Tips for Madison

The Kennedy Manor

by yooperprof

One of the landmark buildings in the "Mansion Hill" neighborhood, the Kennedy Manor is a classic Madison address, home to a venerable restaurant and bar, and right across the street from the desirable Edgewater Inn. I recently stayed in an apartment here - I was visiting a friend who has an apartment here. Finding on-street parking was a chore, but it was worth the effort if only to be able to catch the tremendous views of Lake Mendota and the Capital from the Kennedy's rooftop.

Cheap Urban Canoeing

by Quasdanovic

At James Madison Park (East Gorham St at Blair St) on Lake Mendota you can rent canoes or kayaks in the summer for a small fee ($20-30/day). This is a wonderful way to see the town. Paddle west and you can visit Memorial Union at the University. Paddle east and check out the Yahara locks, where an interesting cast of characters sit and fish. If you are very adventerous, you could even carry your canoe a short distance and cross the Isthmus by using the Yahara, and then explore Lake Monona (I'm not sure this is encouraged, but if you have all day, why not?).

The Star of Midwestern Cuisine

by yooperprof about L'Etoile

Elite chef Odessa Piper brings world-class, Alice Waters-type cooking to central Wisconsin. The menu is a bit of California, a bit of France, and a whole lot of Odessa: interesting, innovative, and original food made from locally grown, naturally harvested produce, as well as meat and fish obtained from the finest producers around the world, and served in a warm, confortable setting. Odessa has worked closely with Wisconsin farmers to help them find markets for high quality, clean and natural foods. It's a bit of a splurge, but it's well worth it.

Reservations are essential. And note that this is the Midwest: L'Etoile stops seating at 9.00 sharp. Why would you want to eat later than that? It's not good for digestion, you know. Wisconsin greens (salad) served with local goat cheese; tomato soup with fresh croutons; maple cheesecake

The Great Dane Pub

by romashkowi about The Great Dane Pub

Located in a very nice stone bulding built in the 1850's and renovated 30 and 50 years after that. Beautiful wood floors and a warm cozy feeling. Has a dining area, an outdoor terrace with high walls and trees, a bar area with about 10 pool tables (with a cigar bar, of course), and an underground stone rathskellar. A mixed crowd, from college students to lawmakers to professionals. A brew-pub with excellent home brews- I recommend the Crop Circle Wheat and the Stone of Scone Ale. Also has nice quality American fare, including an excellent artichoke/cheese dip in a bread bowl.

Best Fine dining in Madison, with a Capitol View

by Tom_In_Madison about L'Etoile

This is the best fine dining in the city. I’ve never been here unfortunately. Started by Odessa Piper, whose name I’ve seen in many cookbooks, Deborah Madisons among others.

Situated on the Capitol Square, so a window seat at night must be gorgeous. Dinner will run you $30 to start and up. For other fine dining options, try 'Harvest' right next door or "Nadia's" on State St.
