B & B @ the Brumder, mix of the 19 & 20th century
Maybe it's because I'm accustomed to sleeping at youth hostels, but when I stayed at the Brumder Mansion I was thoroughly impressed. The owner Carol had accomodated me at short notice, and was an extremely nice and outgoing personality. The mansion was clean and comfortable, and was decorated cheerfully for Christmas. The room my boyfriend and I stayed in (Marion's Suite on the 3rd floor) included a gas fireplace (very useful as the facility seems quite big), a small color tv/vcr with Direct TV, 2 person whirlpool, and a HUGE marble shower. There are different amenities for different rooms, and are priced accordingly. It's best to double check. You can check the availablity and prices of the 5 rooms on the website and reserve one, as well.
Breakfast was nicely presented in the dining room, although Carol gave us the option for the meal in our room. Buttery blueberry waffles, fresh fruit and strong coffee set us straight for the day.
Directions:
Drive west from downtown on Wisconsin Ave; drive past Marquette U. The number streets get higher, & the mansion is on the right side. There is a parking lot that is shared with another inn: after turn on 31st, look out for a iron gate on the LEFT side. Once you pull in, you can park to the right.
Unique Quality: Beautifully well-thought out decor. There are many fantastic antique chairs and settee on the 2nd floor, and some really great wood furniture.
There is a theatre in the basement for special events and acting classes. Check out other events on the webpage.
The owner is a dog lover, so her cute scamps scutter around the house as well! Look around for Big Al.
