Hotel in Downtown

by Leopolean

Would I be better off at the Hilton or the Best Western Downtown?

The BW is $30/night less expensive.

The Hilton has an indoor waterpark, if you enjoy that type of venue. It is a very nice hotel, recently renovated, with a high-class restaurant inside. It is connected by skywalk to several downtown buildings. The Best Western is o.k.

Travel Tips for Milwaukee

go to the lakefront in Summer,...

by ema18

go to the lakefront in Summer, visit Madison and do the Packer Experience at Lambaeu Field, Green Bay. I have been living in Milwaukee since July 1999 and will be leaving to go back to England in July 2000. People from the mid-west are known for their hospitality and I have found this to be true.

Grain Exchange Building (1879)

by yooperprof

Did you realize that in the 1870s, Milwaukee was the WORLD'S LARGEST port for wheat? And that Milwaukee also was home to the world's largest wheat commodity market? The Grain Exchange Building was built to house not only the offices of the merchants who presided over this world grain market, but also to be home for the octagonal trading floor where buying and selling in large quantities took place.

Local banker and railway entrepreneur Alexander Mitchell financed the construction of the Grain Exchange Building in 1879. He hired prominent local architect Edward Townsend Mix (also responsible for the nearby All Saints Cathedral and St. Paul's Episcopal Church) to create a six story Italianate structure, complete with the 175 foot bell tower which rises from its center.

Alexander Mitchell (1817-1887) was was one of the great figures from the Gilded Age of Milwaukee's industrialization. He was also President of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad, and the South Dakota town of Mitchell (home of the famous Corn Palace) was named after him. Mitchell's son John was a prominent US Senator from Wisconsin, and his grandson William (aka "Billy Mitchell") was a prominent World War I aviator - after who Milwaukee's "Mitchell International Airport" is named.

The Place Where Three Rivers Meet

by yooperprof

Three rivers join together here: the Milwaukee, the Menomonee, and the Kinnickkinnic. The swamps close to the lakeshore have long since been filled in, but when you are down in the warehouse district, you are still very much aware that this area is very closely tied to the big lake just to the east. Millwaukeans are very much attached to liquids - and that means more than just beer!

Wisconsin Vocabulary

by londonlover

Just one funny little thing--if you want to sound like a true Wisconsin-ite, ask where the 'bubbler' is when you want a drink from a water fountain. I don't know why they call it a bubbler, but I think it's cute!

A bit of 15th century France in Milwaukee

by Dabs

On the Marquette University campus, you will find an unlikely sight, the St. Joan of Arc Chapel, a lovely 15th century French stone chapel (Chappelle de St. Martin), which was moved stone by stone from Chasse, France to Long Island NY in 1927. In the 1960s the chapel was again dismantled and shipped to Marquette's Milwaukee campus.

The chapel contains a stone on which Joan of Arc prayed before leading her countrymen into battle against the English in 1429. We didn't go inside the chapel as it was already closed but it appears that you can go inside.

On Marquette University's campus, just east of 16th Avenue and south of Wisconsin Avenue.
