Univ. of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Dormitories: Inexpensive, Convenient-EAA AirVenture Week Only

Please note this special accommodation is only for persons attending the annual EAA AirVenture week in last week of July and early August each year. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh offers dormitory double rooms for just $50 per night with liberal arrival and departure times. In other words, you can arrive early before the Airshow starts, as I did. The University Dorms are exceedingly popular with foreign visitors-virtually everyone on my fifth floor Dorm wing were repeat visitors from Australia. The rooms have two twin beds, two desks with chairs, two areas for hanging clothes, two dresser cabinets and a refrigerator with freezer. All have a window wall. Showers and toilets are down the hall. A coin laundry is in the basement. There is a clothes ironing room and a lounge on each floor. Bed linens and towels are provided. No air-conditioning, so many guests bring their own fans or buy locally. Taylor Hall has air-conditioned dorm rooms at higher rate which reservations fill up early. I had a roommate friend who flew in for three nights on a redeye flight and had a rental car from Milwaukee so that reduced my dorm cost to $25 a night for those three nights.

Make reservations by 15 June with payment in full by same date. Canceled reservations are refunded if done early, or if number of nights/arrival date is adjusted early.

Just across the street from Scott Hall where I stayed is the convenient special air-conditioned shuttle bus that leaves for Wittman Regional Airport where EAA AirVenture is starting at 6:20 each morning with frequent round trips until 10 pm with multiple buses on a printed schedule. You can buy a week's bus pass which worked for me for all nine days for just $20, saving substantially from a daily rate. The bus trip takes only about 10-15 minutes to the airshow grounds with one convenient downtown stop also. When you check in-the University sells bus passes, so purchase one at check in, which is across the street at Gruenhagen Conference Center from Scott Hall where I stayed. Open at 6 am each morning is the University's cafeteria next to the bus stop in BlackHawk Commons. Breakfast was ample with many cooked choices. The University has a convenience market-food, drugs, etc. and computer internet stations in Reeve Memorial Union two blocks from Scott Hall on Algoma Blvd. Scott Hall had an ATM machine on first floor and pool tables in the downstairs large lounge room. A bus driver told me the guests leave so many window and floor fans each year (by the hundreds) that the University sells them to the student dorm residents.

Camp Scholler: Camp in style at the Airshow

If you attend the AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh, try camping at the very civilized Camp Scholler right next to the showgrounds. There's an air of friendliness here, with hot showers, camp stores, bus stops, and a playground among other amenities. You can bring anything from a motorcoach to a tent; they can accomodate you. Be forewarned, though, they fill up quickly, so get a campsite just before or right at the beginning of the airshow if you want a good spot. If you fly your own plane to the airshow, there are campgrounds adjacent to the runway where you can pitch your tent right next to your plane. Check their website for more info. Last year the campsites cost $15 per day, on which you can put up two tents - most RVers rent two or more sites.

You can't stay any closer to the airshow than this - talk about convenient!
