Humble Opinions from a Newcomer
"Affordable Dining & Entertainment"
The Thai Cafe- 1227 N. 14th is a great option. Truly authentic. If you do like your food spicy let them know. Remember the chef customizes every dish according to your wishes. Many options for vegetarians because they can leave the meat out. Dancing and entertainment late on weekends. Huge portions so you may want to split the food between two people. Mon- Fri. they have great noodle soup for 5$.
Best Pizza Deal
Theo's Pizza 3329 S. Business Drive has the best deal in town on Pizza. The only pizza place in town that consistently will always offer a great pizza for 5$. A large deep dish pizza with one topping is 5$. They pass out coupons when you buy a pizza which is good for an extra free topping. They don't deliver- but no matter, while they are baking your pizza just browse the towns best Goodwill store located next door.
American Club, Kohler, Wisconsin
Want to splurge in a world class hotel? This is the place. Everything in Kohler exudes class- yet nobody is snooty about it. You have amazing whirlpool tubs in your rooms because Kohler (the bathroom fixture company) started here. The museum is down the street. The friendliest person we met drives the horse and buggy. He gave us a great historic overview. Don't miss the amazing Sports Core fitness center. Take the hotel shuttle to it and enjoy indoor tennis or swimming in addition to the usual work out options.
Luigis Italian Restaurant
Luigis 2910 Kohler Memorial Dr is the reason why there isn't an Olive Garden located in Sheboygan. This place is an institution. Warning! Huge portions so you might want to split an entree with one or two other people. A bit pricey but you do get what you pay for. Locals eat a lot of their pizza.
Johnston Bakery on 1227 Superior is by far the best bakery experienced thus far in Sheboygan. They close at 6pm. They are friendly and courteous and really know what they are doing with baked goods. You may want to avoid the City Bakery on Michigan Ave. We found them rude with everything out of stock by 1pm which may mean they have good baked goods and were just having a bad day. So we will give them another chance. But for now the vote goes to Johnston Bakery on Superior! They were not sold out of delicious cinnamon rolls 1 minute before closing and were still pleasant even though we caused them to close a bit late. I believe you can also enjoy a nice meal here because there are sit down tables available.
Aldi's and Save-A-Lot (Best Prices with Grocery Purchases)
Aldi's on S. Taylor and Save-A-Lot on 1817 N. 8th provide the best deals by far with Grocery purchases. Selection is limited and quality produce selection is sparse, but wow prices are sure reasonable! When the new WalMart Superstore opens up in September it will be interesting to see if Aldi and Save-A-Lot will be beat!
Good First Run Theatre!
The theatre in town which is right off of N. Taylor is really very clean and current with the latest releases. In the summer they run special matinee movies for kids. Ask them about this. Too bad the local Univ. of Wisconsin doesnt seize the opportunity to run a nice selection of foreign movies. There are a few indie films run at the performing Arts Center.
Performing Arts Center
The John Michael Kohler Arts Center offers some cultural events including a few Indie films each year on few Fridays. See their website for more info.
Stefanie H. Weill Center for the Performing Arts
This is where the Sheboygan Symphony performs. It appears that they sponsor other cultural events including some plays and films.
We are thrilled that Sheboygan has a Symphony! We will look forward to attending the performances starting this fall. It really is awesome that a town this size made it a priority to support a symphony. Kudos to the locals for supporting their symphony- Sheboyganites have class!

Lake Michigan Beach
The beachfront walk along Lake Michigan is spectacular. Keep driving along the Lake until you see the white sandy beach. For some reason it is usually empty. This beach is North of the Yaht club and provides free parking. Bring your sunscreen and beach umbrella and enjoy one of the best beaches around!
USA's Largest Flag!!
See this to believe it! S. Taylor Drive. You can't miss it. Acuity allows you to drive up and park at this flag. Grab a brochure and read about it. It is worth the stop!
Family Video Rentals (Cheap DVD's at a price)
Family Video rentals on Calumet Drive is very popular with Locals. They have great deals on DVD rentals. They have so many specials that it is really confusing- so ask management about the specials. Also Ask about their special weekend value which will be on one designated new release movie per weekend.
You can get quite a few other deals so ask the management. Cheap prices will hopefully make up for the really odd and infuriating queue system they have at the checkouts. There are no ropesor signs that say "form line here". Most customers will line up in one line behind the checkout person they think is the only one there- then all of a sudden another cashier will appear and take customers first who have not waited but happen to be pushy. Management's fault reallly!
Never, Never, Never return your DVD's late. Management will Never cut you a break on late returns. They must be in the drop box by midnight. This is where they obviously make their money. Also the foreign selection is practically nonexistent. So the cheap prices come at a price! If you want less frustration at a higher price try Blockbuster on S. Taylor Drive.
Swimming Lagoon at the City Park (summer only)
Swimming at the Lagoon on Calumet Drive at the City Park is a great way to get an affordable outdoor waterpark with warm water to swim in. Life guards seem to take their job seriously which is good for safety. There are free paddleboats. They allow you to bring your own beach chairs and such but no inflatable toys. A small admission price will provide you with a hidden gem of a place to swim. Water that is warmer than lake Michigan and a much better price than the indoor waterpark in town.
Sheboygan has a great bus system indeed! Regular routes driven by courteous drivers on a reliable schedule. They run buses late into the night. You will often find the bus to be practically empty. Sheboygan Transit serves a large area actually- and is a great service for a town this size! I don't think the locals know what a great thing they have going here.
Best School: University of Wisconsin- Sheboygan
World class University system. Great place to get your first two years of college. An amazing University system second only to the University of California system.
If you need an Emergency Room while you are visiting Sheboygan or other hospital related services, St. Nick Hospital on N. Taylor Drive is definitely the first choice for most locals. (There are two hospitals in town)
Paragon Surgical Center/ Sheboygan ENT
Paragon Medical Center- 1411 N. Taylor Drive has:
1. Full service medical spa.
2. Fully staffed Audiology Dept.
3. State of the art Surgery Center for facial plastic surgery.
Dr. Campbell, who founded the medical center, is renowned for his specialty in facial plastic surgery and also provides his full expertise as an ENT Doctor. This practice and surgery center is world class in every way. Patients feel pampered and cared for the moment they step foot into this newly opened architectural jewel.
Sheboygan Internal Medicine Associates
Best group of internal medicine Doctors in town...or in the Midwest. Extremely high quality of care given by these Doctors!
"Misc. Info.: Laundry, Trash, Internet, & Biking"
Midway Laundry 1404 Michigan Ave (on corner of 14th) is a great place to do your laundry because you get your money's worth. The dryers actually are set on full blast so they stay hot during the entire dry cycle. There is a smoking and non-smoking section.
The only other place we tried was Wash House Laundry- 1602 Indiana Ave. where we do NOT recommend going unless you don't mind waiting an hour for a pair of socks to dry. The dryer settings are set on cooler settings to try to nickel and dime you.
Explaining the Garbage collection system:
For travelers who are house-sitters and summer guests renting a summer cottage in Sheboygan- let me explain the trash system as it was explained to us by an old-timer: Find out your assigned collection day. Bag all non-recyclable items in clear or white plastic bags and leave at the edge of the road between the sidewalk and roadway.
Recyclables are picked up on alternating weeks. One week will be the cardboard and paper week where you place broken down boxes or newspapers inside another box. The next week will be blue bag week where you will bag all recycled items like cans and plastic bottles into blue plastic bags. If you don't buy some blue bags just use the Grocery store PickNSave blue bags. Remember to never place the bags inside a trash can and also never place anything in black bags. They won't be picked up.
Charter Cable and Internet:
Charter Communications has a monopoly on most of WI. For their best deals sign up on the internet. Rates will be higher if you phone in to sign up. They usually have a 6 month special bundle for internet and cable. Watch out after the special ends though! You may want to downgrade your cable package after the special runs out to keep the prices in line. The internet is fast and worth the price. Purchase your own modem to save the monthly charge.
Cars are king here in Wisconsin as in most of the USA- so pedestrians beware. Even if you are at a marked crosswalk, don't try to cross the street until motor vehicle traffic clears. For example, if you are driving, and stop to try to wave a pedestrian across the street, they will wave you on suspiciously like it was a trap, where you were planning to run them down. So If you just arrived from California and come to a screeching stop to let a pedestrian cross the street- be prepared to be rear-ended.
Great Bike Path from Sheboygan- Plymouth
There is a great bike path from Sheboygan to Plymouth. Roundtrip is over 30 miles. The bike path is paved the whole way and is well cared for. When you get over the shock of having the occaisional motorized scooter roar past remember that they are allowed on the trail too. The best place to park your car and unload your bikes is at the Kohler Trailhead park on Erie. Take Taylor to Erie then head west on Erie until it deadends into the park. Parking is free. After going through the tunnel which goes under the highway turn right to start your journey.
