an easy route

by shalonda

I am traveling from Chicago,Il. to Wisconsin Dells, but I do not drive. I want to take the metra train because it more cost effective. However metra only goes to Kenosha. How would I then get to Wisconsin Dells? Also does anyone know how long it takes to get to Kenosha from Chicago and from Kenosha to the Dells? (sidebar) I'm traveling with one more adult and four children.

First off, you mean Amtrak and not the Metra. The Metra is a suburban commuting line. Kenosha is about 75 minutes north of downtown Chicago... longer if you are driving and stuck in traffic. I don't know how you can get to the Dells from there ... I suggest calling the Dells and asking them... or visiting their Web site... maybe there is a bus or some other kind of arrangement.

If you get to Kenosha, your options are very limited.
I would concentrate more on getting either directly to the Dells or to Madison WI.

The Dells is about 1.5 hours past Madison on I-94. There is no real convienient train station that I know of, so your best option is a bus. That's why I suggest simply looking at something like Greyhound directly from Chicago to Dells.

You can take Van Galder bus to Madison, about $44 r/t from O'Hare.
To get to Dells from Madison....? I don't think it's possible without driving. I don't know of any busses. You may want to give a call to Treasure Island or one of the bigger waterparks there and ask them, they may know.

There probably is a bus from Kenosha to Milw. Then Badger Bus will get you from Milw (downtown or airport) to Madison.

The whole thing is about a 3 1/2 hr drive from Chi to Dells, by trains, busses and transferring, it's going to be a good chunk of a day without a car.

Amtrak does have train that can take u from Chicago to the Dells. Go to amtrak's website and put the two locations there, you can find the schedule and purchase the tickets online too.. i think it is about 27 or 37 bucks for one trip. The amtrak train station is located downtown Wisconsin dells.

I'm not positive, since I never tried; but I think it would be hard to get around Wisconsin Dells without a car. I am not aware of any good bus systems within the city and everything is not within walking distance. That is something to keep in mind also.

The last two responses are correct. Amtrak does stop at the Dells twice daily (once eastbound, once westbound). And it is indeed rather difficult to get around the Dells without a car. The Boats and the Ducks have their own shuttles to and from downtown, but that's it. There is no city bus line or cab service in Wisconsin Dells. The larger resorts like Wilderness, Kalahari, and Great Wolf may offer shuttle buses for their own guests, but you would have to call the resorts directly and inquire.

go to Great Wolf Lodge. I stayed there for my friends birthday party and it was awesome. The water park was the best. Also the rooms are are huge. You can get all the ice you want and it is FREE. I loved going to the surf shop. They had over 100 different swim suit styles. And their stuff was not that expencive.

A lot of Mini Golf!

by mwenn2100

Pirates Cove Miniature Golf is insane. They have over 90 holes, or 5 games of 18 holes. The whole course is set up with 17 big waterfalls, footbridges, sandstone rock formations, and gorgeous landscaping. This is one of the first places I go when I get to Wisconsin Dells. I just think it's really fun and the setting is far better than most miniature golf courses I've been to.

What's left to say... if you like mini golf and you want to spend some time playing in a pretty location then go! Check their website for discount coupons!

"Dells Hiking Trails"

There are many hiking trails throughout the Dells with spectacular views be sure to take your camera and comfortable shoes. Be prepared to do just a little climbing up some steep trails. It is worth every step you take.
