As soon as you walk into the lobby you know you’re somewhere a bit different. There’s a stunning stained glass ceiling (see second photo) and beautiful Western artwork and photography by Wyoming artists.
The hotel is packed with atmosphere but the mod cons aren’t neglected. Our room was spacious and comfortable, if old-fashioned in the character of the furnishings; the heating was efficient (it was a cold day!), the TV was good size, and there was a hair-dryer and all the necessary toiletries in the bathroom. But it’s downstairs that this hotel really scores – the magnificent lobby; a friendly little coffee shop with great lattes and the almost-obligatory (in Wyoming) bison’s head on the wall; a more formal and traditional restaurant “The Capitol Grille”; and even a spa, which sadly I didn’t have time to try out.
The location couldn’t be more convenient, right across the square from the Union Pacific Depot. The downside of this though is the parking: if you’re staying here on a weekday you have to move your car to their parking lot a couple of blocks away once you’ve unloaded your bags, But as we were there at the weekend we could take advantage of free street parking and could leave the car right outside!
We’re always willing to pay a little more for a downtown location as we prefer to be at the centre of things. If you take advantage of the hotel’s internet special prices however, this place is pretty good value for money – we paid $79 for our large room with a king-size bed.
I loved all the original art, both traditional and quite modern. My third photo shows a beautifully painted sculpture of a bison which was on display in the lobby
