We spent a night at this small guest ranch just a few miles east of Yellowstone on the road to Cody. Although it’s not really necessary to break that journey, we’d wanted to go riding while in Wyoming and this seemed to be a great area in which to do that.
The accommodation is in log cabins scattered among the pines but all within an easy walk of the main lodge building. We had one of the smaller cabins, with a queen bed and small bathroom. It was very cosy although fairly basic, but was fine for one night. Incidentally, one reason we chose Shoshone is that unlike many other ranches in the area it's possible to stay just the one night (many insist on a whole week) and to pay separately for any rides or other excursions you want rather than having to buy a package.
The lodge building houses a dining room, again very rustic in style. You can get a simple evening meal here at very reasonable prices, though the choice is limited (burger or chicken sandwich on the night of our stay, plus very good huckleberry ice cream) and no alcohol is available.
Unique Quality: The main reason for our visit though was to go riding, and again the prices here are very reasonable. We paid $25 per person for an hour’s ride that was actually well over that length. As inexperienced riders we felt well looked-after by George the wrangler, and loved the experience of viewing the wonderful scenery around the lodge from the saddle. See my separate Off the beaten path tip for more on our riding adventure!
