Luxury Accommodations

by TOPSHELFPUBCRAWLER

I am seeking luxury accommodations near Gillette Wyoming. I Understand the hotels there are rather modest. We are working on a project there and I am meeting some very important business associates in the middle of January. I figured we could stay at a luxury guest ranch. I am not looking for activities other than a nice restaurant and bar. Any suggestions would be welcomed and appreciated. I do not mind staying up to an hour away from Gillette.

Thank you

Sean

If you really don't mind being about an hour away you might consider the B&B we stayed at. It's not quite luxury but it's very comfortable and rather a special place to stay. It's called Spahn's - there's a review on my Sheridan page (http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/a0272/dc52c/3/) and the website is www.bighorn-wyoming.com/

First, in January I would be staying as close to the freeway I-90 and limit my driving to as little as needed. Sudden storms can dump large amounts of snow and leave you stranded.

It has been a couple of years since I stayed in Gillette, but as I recall there were some mid/upper level hotels that were just built right along I-90. I wouldn't call them luxury but still decent brand name hotels. The Clarion looked very nice and there is also a Candlewood Suites.

Since there's a Candlewood Suites there, that would be my first choice for a long stay. They have kitchens with full refrigerators and they're nice places.

Sean, I can't speak from experience but did some digging out of curiosity. Your problem is that you're just not going to be in a part of Wyoming that's partial to 4 and 5-star hotels!

For sure, you're going to want to stay close to the interstate as winter driving in Wyoming can be a challenge.

Take a look at the Clarion Inn and Conference Center in Gillette. Looks like a good business hotel but unfortunately, no bar. I can't seem to find a hotel with a bar in Gillette!

http://www.clarionhotel.com/hotel-gillette-wyoming-WY047/Hotel-Photos

But here's an interesting idea:
Buffalo is west on the interstate about 60-70 miles. The Occidental Hotel there is getting very good reviews on TA. It's not your 5-star biz digs but lacking the ability to even FIND that, it would provide a unique and fun "Wild West" experience. It does have a bar and restaurant. Don't know how many in your party will be gentlemen but if so, they might get a kick out of it.

The Hampton Inn in Buffalo also has really good reviews. Good business hotel but again, doesn't look to have a bar.

Here's a ranch near Buffalo (13 miles from) with conference services:

I can't get a bead on whether they have bar service, and meals are "family style". Also, no TVs in rooms.

I found a really nice one north of Buffalo but they're closed during winter - which might be the case for many.

Thanks Kate, that's I why I love ya!

I was running into the same problem you were finding; All just basic, modest hotels. Don't get me wrong, I am not a travel snob, I just travel quite a bit with these guys. We are all in the Oil & Gas / Energy business. We have all stayed at budget hotels near the plants in which we conduct business, but that is usually when traveling independently making site visits. When the occasion warrants that we all meet to discuss a project, we often find appropriate accommodations for our business associates. I find it gives me home field advantage for negotiations. Sounds silly I know but it really is effective.

I knew hotel chains would not be even in the "B" category so I was looking for Dude / Guest Ranches. Something lodgy, with good food and some vino. And like you, I found many either closed during the winter months or much too far away near Yellow Stone.

Many thanks. . . . And Happy New year!

What you're trying to do isn't silly at all, and I know you are FAR from a travel snob!! :)

Wish I could do better here - there just doesn't same to be the right stuff within ropin' distance!

The B&B looks great! Just a bit too far I am afraid. After a little research, we may be headed closer to Mount Rushmore to combine a little business with pleasure. Thanks for the recommendation.

Thank you for the recommendations James. Those were the places which seemed most convenient.

Thanks Colin.
Just a short two - three day stay, but seems like the most reasonable place to stay if we stay in town.

Thanks.

You're welcome - and yes, it may be a bit too far, especially in winter. One for a future trip maybe ...

Hope you find somewhere suitable,

Sarah

These guys are outdoors-men. They are very successful, are very serious about business, but play just as hard. I have spent some time in Alaska with most of them, salmon and halibut fishing. They are not afraid to get cold and dirty but they definitely want nice accommodations, food, and wine. There will be an introduction to a new player in the mix and I want to do some relationship building and he seems receptive. I found a snow mobile lodge between Gillette and Mt. Rushmore. I am thinking site visit in Gillette first day, then onto the lodge to do some snowmobiling the next day. Visit Mt Rushmore the last full day, then fly home.

Cheers!

Hey Sean. I was durious as well. Found nothing really above and beyond what has been suggested. This ranch is the second oldest dude ranch in the U.S. and a landmark for over a hundred years.

The Paradise Ranch even has no kids month.....Both have cocktail service, but both are closed during the winter.....

Sorry dude......no help here.....d:o/

Re: Luxury Accommodations

by TOPSHELFPUBCRAWLER

Thanks E, I ran across Paradise too, but like said, closed for the misery.

At least I know these guys won't be disappointed that they missed out on something better than Candlewood.

Still looking into Trailshead Lodge, half way between Gillette and Mt. Rushmore. I got busy at the office so I suspended further investigation until tomorrow.

Hope your Christmas was a good one. Hope the New Year proves to be as well.

Cheers!

Re: Luxury Accommodations

Yup - Paradise was the one that looked fabulous. But closed. Damn.

If you are on the road between Rapid City and Sturgis be sure to stop and eat at the Elk Creek Saloon just off I-90. The steaks are huge and probably some of the best beef I have eaten any where. My wife does not like beef that much and she wouldn't even share.

Again, I would be very watchfull of the road conditions as they can close I-90 on a moments notice and make you turn around in the middle of no where and go back to much more no where to wait out the road opening.

Mt. Rushmore is very impressive and I only saw it during the summer day light. I can only think that with snow on it and a night time laser show would be awesome.

Re: Luxury Accommodations

If you want true luxury and very cool place then Jackson Hole is want you want. While, I have only driven through there during the summer on my Harley on route to Yellowstone, my best friend use to meet his high school buddies there every winter to snowmobile for the last 30 years. My buddy rates Jackson Hole in the winter as his most favorite spot in the USA. If you are looking for a place to get the "one up manship" just look at the winter photos of JH.

There is also Deadwood, SD which is very close to where you are talking about. I don't know much about it other than Kevin Costner owns a saloon/casino/hotel there and lots of people enjoy staying in town during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Many thanks Jim, I truly appreciate the advise.

Re: Luxury Accommodations

I would not stay an hour away in January. Sometimes they shut down the roads and you won't be able to get back.

Re: Luxury Accommodations

by Dymphna1

I hate to tell you this, but I just found out that you probably won't find any rooms in Gillette of any type. There is an oil boom going on right now and everything is booked. People are staying in campgrounds in this weather because they can't get a room or even purchase a house. If you find anything - take it! Everything in the area is booked.
