Jenny is the jewel

Jenny Lake is the crown jewel of Grand Teton National Park campgrounds. I camped here in 1994 and had to race against another driver all the way from Yellowstone to get a spot. Actually, we both wound up getting one but only because a bear had torn into a tent the night before and many people high-tailed it out of there.

This was a bit less hectic. No bears and since we were coming only form Signal Mountain, a mere 16 miles north, we were there plenty early. Even in September, this place fills early and in summer, generally by 11 AM. We got a great big spot. It was what seemed miles from the only restroom in the campground but it was well worth it to be so far removed. We had pancakes one morning despite the frigid temperatures and it was every bit as nice as I remembered. We really enjoyed our time here, especially in the mid-afternoons after going out for a dawn photo shoot. Hell, it's too cold to cook pancakes early in the morning in September at that elevation anyway. I think we might have taken a few naps too. Very pleasant place to camp and one not to miss.

Unique Quality: Jenny Lake Campground has only 51 sites and is strictly for tent campers. They do not even allow trailers so it's a very quiet place at night. The spots are very spread out aside from the ones clustered around only the restroom in the small campground. These are a bit small and lack trees but do afford views of the Tetons so if you like to hang at camp and watch the mountains, they are great. I'd rather have a more secluded spots, go out to watch the mountains by one of the amazing nearby lakes at dawn and return to tranquility in the afternoon. Hey, call me crazy.

Jenny Lake is first come-first served and cost $19 per night.
