Devils Tower

by RMath

"Devils Tower"

This is a Must See! It is Huge!
I plan on returning again asap.

"More of Devils Tower"

You can not get tired of looking, With our Binos we could see people climbing the tower, All I wanted to do was look, Other than the Wind it was very pretty. Weather was about 80 but the wind was about 30mph

"A close up"

This is just a closer view of the tower.

" What is it ?"

Suddenly a strange mountain towers into the sky. What is it? The indians told a story of a
group of children that were playing. Suddenly a bear attacked them. The ground rose and
the claws of the bear made the marks on the side of the new mountain.

It is more likely it is an ancient vulcano. The basalt is left standing after the topsoil eroded away.

" prairydog"

Near Devils Tower lives a colony of prairydogs.

"Close Encounters"

Devil's Tower has long been an attraction due to the obviously bizzare nature of its creation. Some have climbed it, and if you do and create your own route, they will name it after you. Devil's Tower was made famous in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind when Richard Dreyfus built a model of this place in mud in his living room. He then made a pilgrammage to the tower and subsequently flew off with some aliens. It is in a beautiful part of Wyoming and I encourage a visit if you are passing through the area.

"An Indian Folktale"

Many Native American legends have been passed down thru time, but this legend seems to be the most popular.

One day, an Indian tribe was camped beside the river and seven small girls were playing at a distance. The region had a large bear population and a bear began to chase the girls. They ran back toward their village, but the bear was about to catch them. The girls jumped upon the rock about three feet high and began to pray to the rock, "Rock, take pity on us; Rock, save us." The rock heard the pleas of the young girls and began to rise, pushing them higher and higher out of reach of the bear. The bear clawed and jumped at the side of the rock, and broke its claws and fell to the ground.

Directions

The bear continued to jump at the rock until the girls were pushed up to the sky, where they are to this day in a group of seven little stars(the Pleiades). The marks of the bear claws are there yet. As one looks upon the tower and enjoys its uniqueness, it isn't hard to imagine this legend to be true.

DEVILS TOWER NATL MONUMENT

by wgrc1971

PARK SITE: http://www.nps.gov/deto/

You may recognize this as the scene of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", the popular UFO movie from 1977. (http://us.imdb.com/Title?Close+Encounters+of+the+Third+Kind+(1977))

It's a 1267' Monolith, previously beneath the ground, but it now sticks out of the ground as the land around it eroded over time. It is a sacred site to many Native Americans.

It is located in the Northeastern part of the state, mostly prairies, near the town of Gilette.

There is a small town not too far from Devils Tower on Interstate 90 called Sundance (where I usually fill up my gas tank) and I believe there's a Best Western Motel or some such place there but I don't think a town that small would be the best place to stay because it is so small. I would recommend just going on to Rapid City, SD. That way you have A LOT more choices in motels and in restaurants and the quality of both is going to be better than it would in some of those tiny towns in Eastern Wyoming. It's beautiful scenery in that part of the country but there's not much else. The drive from Devils Tower to Rapid City doesn't take long and it's interstate almost all the way so it is a very easy drive. The road off the 90 from Sundance to the Tower isn't interstate but it's a very good road.

There is also a campground within 2 miles at Belle Fourche.

Spearfish is closer than Rapid City. It is a clean city!

road trip gift

by tigarlilyz

My parents are going on a year-long motorcycle road trip starting in August. They already have travel books and a Parks Pass. Does anyone have a good gift idea, perhaps a different type of discount card or a fun national club?

Re: road trip gift

wow! FUN TRIP, FUN QUESTION... hmm. lets see. year long moto trip - what would i like (triumph tiger rider here, long trip - plus i've lived out of a vw camper bus while going across the country a couple of times.

1. 1 get away from rain free pass. a gift cert to a nice hotel chain (marriott, radisson, hyatt etc) - when they are tired of travel and want to luxuriate, pull out your get away from rain pass - and voila. luxury in any city.

2. a cert for free massage for two. site on a bike for 10 hours and a hot tub/ massage is probably heaven.

3. they'll probably want to get away from each other - get your mom a cert for free facial. dad can go have a stogy and scotch.

4. an IPOD and headphones. tunes make the time go by. get a splitter so that they can both listen.

5. a GPS? might be fun for them to see where they are. If you want to go crazy, some hand held GPS units provide maps etc so that they can navigate.

6. two really nice Petzl headlamps. key for road trips.

7. some really nice socks. dry socks are key. smartwool socks rock.

8. some stretchy fleece pants (www.rei.com). great for lounging.

9. a picture cell phone so they can send you pics of all the great places they'll see.

don't miss the tetons, glacier, the needles of northern california, yosemite, mono lake, devils tower. come to think of it, maybe a year is too short :-)
