Only five minutes off Interstate 80 between Laramie and Cheyenne is this amazing sight. Huge boulders and a large number of smaller rocks are scattered over a sizeable area, carved by the wind into incredible shapes like mushrooms and giant loaves of bread.
Vedauwoo (pronounced "VEE-dah-voo") means "Earth-born spirit" in the language of the Medicine Bow tribe, and the place has a mystical quality, especially if you wander a few hundred yards from the parking lot. The air is quite still and filled with the scent of the pines, and you can imagine all sorts of things (real and not-so-real) lurking in the various crannies in the rocks.
More practically, it's a great spot for a picnic or a short hike, and is also popular with climbers. Go quite early, before the sun is too high, and you'll get some great photos and probably, like us, have the place almost to yourself.
