Travel Tips for Lusk

Following the stage

by toonsarah

Lusk is situated on the old route of the famous Deadwood-Cheyenne stage, and you can retrace this route on Highway 85. We followed it south from Newcastle to Lusk and beyond to Torrington. When you drive through the surrounding countryside it’s easy to imagine another world when travel though this area was an altogether more dangerous activity. Bleak landscapes, miles of near-empty roads and some of the biggest, bluest skies you’ll ever see!

The route was in use from 1876 to carry passengers from Cheyenne to the gold fields in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The rich cargo on the coaches was a regular target for thieves and highwaymen. To protect the travellers, and their gold, men were paid to sit alongside the driver with a shotgun for protection – hence the term to “ride shotgun”. Look around you as you drive on the modern highway and you’ll see the dramatic rocky outcrops and dried-up river beds which must have made perfect hiding places for the robbers lying in wait for the stages.

Hat Creek Stage Station and stage coach tracks

by Beanamo

When a group of army soldiers went out looking for hat creek, Nebraska for a place to build a fort, they found a creek but it was the wrong one. They built anyway and while the fort is no longer existing, the Hat Creek Stage Station and post office is! If you ever get a chance to read a book called "Hat Creek and Hard Times" there is an amazing amount of history in the area around the station. Around the turn of the century that part of the country was a popular area for stage robberies and indian attacks. The station is in great condition and you can peek in the windows and still see the original names on the mailboxes.
The old hwy runs along what was basicly the Cheyenne-Deadwood stage coach route. If you head south from the stage station up through the breaks you will come to some of the very last sandstone outcroppings and looking northwest from the road you can still see two very distinct ruts cut in the stone.
The best way to reach the stage house is to find the historical marker along hwy 85 about 14 miles north of Lusk, turn east there and go to the old schoolhouse and take a right. The station is about a mile or two south.

Convenient stopover

by toonsarah

Lusk’s strategic position on the Deadwood-Cheyenne stage made it a popular stopover with the travellers of that day, and like them we found it a useful one night stop on our tour of Wyoming.

There’s not a huge amount to do in the town itself, apart from the obligatory small museum that every town in the state seems to have, but there are a number of decent motels and a few places to eat. We were very happy with our choice of the former and very disappointed with our choice of restaurant, despite the recommendations of other VTers – as you can read in my tip.

Lusk for Life

by yooperprof

Lusk is sort of "out there." It's in the central part of the eastern edge of Wyoming, about 100 miles east of Casper, and 130 miles north northeast of Cheyenne. It's the seat (population 1378) of Niobrara County, and I stopped here for lunch on my drive from Ft. Collins up to Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota.

Lusk has some nice shops, and a great small pizza parlor which I can strongly recommend to other travellers. I'm not the first VT member to have discovered Lusk, so I am not the only person here who has been charmed by this place.

The Silver Cliff Hotel doesn't look like it has accepted guests for a number of years, but it would make a fun restoration project for the right person!

Lusk has a few imposing brick buildings in its downtown. It's the market center for a wide region that extends into neighboring Nebraska.

Monument of the Plains!
