Travel Tips for Sheridan

Beautiful Mountains

by red_stone

If I had to take someone somewhere in Sheridan, I would have to say the Big Horn mtns, camping. There is a lot of animals to view while up in the Big Horn Mtns. Sheridan is snuggled up against the Big Horn mtns. In Sheridan itself, there are some nice restaurants. Depending on what time of year you visit will depend on what there is to do at the time. In the summer time, you can go to the rodeo, the fair, the monster truck show, and the "rodeo weekend parade." My fondest memory of Sheridan would be the town itself. The mountains, the big skies, animals everywhere, and riding up and down Main St. I liked riding around on all the roads, going to Perkins late at night, going to the 24 hour Wal-mart, and cruising Main Street.

Forest roads and mountain tracks

If you have a suitable vehicle or if like us you stay at Spahns and arrange to tour with Ron (see my Things to do tips) you can get off the highways and really get to know the Big Horns. Even with a regular 2-wheel drive some of the forest roads are passable (with care) and will take you to places only a few tourists to Wyoming ever see. One such road is the red grade road that goes up into the mountains from the small town of Big Horn 16 miles south of Sheridan, passing Spahn’s to your left. You probably won’t be able to explore all the hidden corners of this area but you will get some great views and a sense of the emptiness of this beautiful but (thankfully) under-visited area.

The photo was taken at a Surge Dam which we stopped to investigate with Ron. The dam was built by loggers cutting ties for the railroads, who needed to use the small stream to transport the timber and used the dam to increase its flow. None of us on the tour, including Ron, could work out exactly how it functioned and I haven’t been able to discover anything more on the internet since, so if anyone reading this knows how these things work do get in touch!

Sheridan, Wyoming

Sheridan, Wyoming. Snuggled up against the Big Horn Mountains, is Sheridan. Sheridan is a beautiful place to visit. If there is nothing special going on, such as a rodeo, then there is plenty of scenery to take in. Main Street is also an attraction. Park the car, and go for a walk, visiting the shops. Be sure to stop by King Ropes.
