Lake Yellowstone Hotel from the lake by toonsarah We spent two nights in a Frontier Cabin at the Lake Yellowstone Hotel, and although the cabin’s specification was the same as the one at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge, this was in every way a better experience! OK it did cost a little more ($112 rather than $92) but it was really worth it. For one thing, the cabin was nicer – larger and with four windows making it feel really light and airy. [Actually, to be honest the cabin we checked into did have one fault – the carpet was still very wet from a recent wash. But the staff on the reception desk were very helpful and managed to find us an alternative one despite the fact that they were obviously very busy and had lots of guests to accommodate.] The hotel itself, where we ate, drank and relaxed on both evenings, is really lovely – an elegant colonial style building very unlike the usual “national park rustic” style you find elsewhere. There’s a large conservatory-type lounge with beautiful views of the lake, where you can get great cocktails (try the ruby red cosmopolitan!) and enjoy live piano music before and after dinner, or get a breakfast coffee and pastry if you don’t want the full works. And the dining room again is very light and manages to feel quite peaceful and stylish despite the large size and considerable numbers being served. We also enjoyed the food here more than at Old Faithful – see my dining tip for details.
Lots to recommend this place, if you don't mind paying a little extra - the views of the lake (though not from the cabins), the elegant atmosphere, the fine dining! And I guess if you really wanted to splash out it would be a great experience to stay in one of the hotel rooms themselves but that would cost you around $200 a night.

We spent our first night in Yellowstone in this cabin at the Old Faithful Snow Lodge. The facilities were fine, if fairly basic. The cabin was right at the edge of the huge Old Faithful complex, which meant a bit of a walk when we wanted to go out for dinner (at the Old Faithful Inn) but had the bonus that it was very quiet. Our window looked out to the surrounding pine woods so it was easy to feel comfortably detached from the tourist melee of the complex. Ours was a Frontier Cabin, described as "Duplex motel-style unit, simple but comfortable with a bathroom with shower, toilet and sink" - which is fair enough. The lodge itself has an attractive modern design. There’s a restaurant (we didn’t dine there but had a good breakfast the next morning though service was a little slow), and a small but comfortable bar with good cocktails. All in all it’s a bit more peaceful than the more famous Old Faithful Inn and I felt better value for money, though not a patch on the Lake Hotel where we stayed for the remaining two night of our visit.

Interior of the Snow Lodge by KimberlyAnn I have only seen the lobby of this accommodation, which was pleasant, with a modern western atmosphere. Located in the Old Faithful area, but generally less expensive than the grand, log Old Faithful Inn, it was built in the late 1900s, being dedicated in May, 1999. This lodge has gotten good reviews in various publications. The price of rooms and cabins ranges from $80 to $156. It is important to make your reservations as early as possible.

Back Side of the Old Faithful Inn by KimberlyAnn This is such a grand, large, old log structure. When you enter the Inn be sure to look up! The ceiling is 85 feet above you, and there are a series of overhanging balconies working their way toward the ceiling. The lobby also contains a huge, rough stone fireplace, which has a fire going when the weather is chilly. The railings and poles are made of interesting twisted, gnarled logs. None of the other hotels in the park can equal the size and grandeur of this log structure. I have not seen the rooms, but they are advertised to be a blend of rustic history and elegant renovation. Even if you do not stay here, you have to step inside the Inn just to see it. The price for rooms, suites, and cabins ranges from $78 - $371. Be sure to make your reservations as early as possible.

Travelodge by kazander Once again I did not hit the mark with a great place to stay. At least not for our honeymoon. It looked like more than a Travelodge on the outside with it's log cabin exterior, but inside same old motel room. Now , if it had not been our Honeymoon it would have been just fine. I think the cabin at Signal mountain in Grand Teton spoiled me a little bit! But it was more than affordable, and had a nice location. Sometimes you just need to get out of the park for a little bit!
One thing I was not a fan of was actually the fan! The bathroom fan is connected to the light, and that baby is super loud. A hairdryer is provided. Continental breakfast in the morning.

Grant Village Resturant by kazander Oh why, oh why don't I listen? Every guide book I read said that Grant Village accomodations were UGLY. They didn't mince words. Some of them went so far as to say they were hideous....And I booked us a room there ANYWAY. Silly me! I thought "oh how bad can they be?" Well they were pretty ugly. I really felt as if I was sent back in time to my college days. Plain, boring, beige and tan buildings on the outside. But it was the room that really gave it the title of "hideous". 80's style through and though! BAD art posters of some abstracts in pink and turquoise, white formica ect... ugh yicky. But it was a good location for us to rest our heads in between adventures. (Not at ALL honeymoon romantic though!)
On the plus side, the dining rooms were nice. Log Cabin structures with lovely lake views. They have a post office, general store, boat rentals and a museum. One of the ammenities I though was very cute, was the bear shaped soaps they gave us with our toiletries. it's run by Xanterra (like most things in the park are save the general stores) You can make all "in park " hotel reservations, dinner reservations, and activity reservations with one phone call.

The Mammoth Area is Nestled In This Valley by KimberlyAnn Located in the beautiful valley, seen in the photo, this is an area, which was often visited by earlier visitors. Once a fort, you will still see the striking stone buildings of the old Fort Yellowstone. I have only seen the lobby and the wonderful dining room, but based on those I would assume that the rooms would be very comfortable. This would be a good place to stay if you wish to drive the Lamar Valley route looking for wild life, or wish to see Mammoth Hot Springs. It would be a long distance to drive to see sites on the west or south side of the park. This hotel is open for a summer and a winter season, as it is located on the west end of the only plowed road in the park. Suites, rooms, and cabins range in price from $64 to $291. It is important to make your reservations well in advance.
There are often elk grazing in the area, and it is close to Lamar Valley, and the Mammoth Hot Spring terraces. Theme: HotelComparison: about averageAddress: P.O. Our Campsite in Madison by KimberlyAnn This campground is in a good area for seeing the west side of the park. The setting is wooded, and there is a lovely river valley at one end of the park where you can often see wild life. Restrooms, and dump station are available. No electrical hook ups or showers, however generator times are from 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. We have stayed here a number of times, and will be staying there in future trips. Make your reservations as far in advance as you are able.

Surging Spring is In the Nearby West Thumb Basin by KimberlyAnn Near the lovely, small West Thumb Geyser Basin, Grant Village is a good accommodation if you are planning on driving to the Grand Teton National Park for a day. Be aware, however, that it would be a long drive to visit anything on the northern side of the park. I have not seen the rooms here, but the buildings are fairly new. This accommodation is usually open May 28 through Oct. 3, with prices ranging from $98 to $112. Be sure to make reservations as far in advance of your trip as possible.

Our accomodations for our 2nd trip to Yellowstone, Sept 2006 Our little one room cabin was a great home base for our Yellowstone adventures. It was nestled with a few others down a little road in the woods. We had a little kitchenette to make coffee for the morning, prepare our lunches for the next day, and heat up a meal for dinner. A little table and benches served as our "desk" area, though most people would use it as a place to eat. The bed was incredibly comfortable, perfect after along day of hiking around the park. If you are visiting with more than just 2 people, larger cabins are available.
One fantastic bonus of staying in these little out of the way cabins is the wildlife! We heard wolves howling throughout the night and a couple of bison could be seen daily wandering around right by the general store that is also the main office for the cabins. (I've heard they see a lot of moose as well, sadly we didn't have any walking though town a'la Northern Exposure)
