A Great Place to Visit the Stunning Canyon From

Canyon Village campground is on the east side of the park, and is centrally located between the Tower-Roosevelt area and Lake Village. It is in a wooded, shaded location, and has 272 sites. There are flush toilets in the campground, and a dump station. Showers and laundry facilities are near by, but cost an extra fee. Generators are permitted from 8 AM to 8 PM.

The Canyon Village area also has a gas station, stores, and restaurants available close to the campground.

This campground is generally open from early June to early September. Check the park web site to find the current year’s opening and closing dates. This is a very popular campground, so like all the other reservable campgrounds in Yellowstone, be sure to make your reservations as far ahead of time as you possible can.

Note: Both my photos of the campground were taken during the second week of September. During the summer months, this campground will be filled to capacity. My third photo is of Dunravin Pass, which you will drive over if you travel from Canyon to Tower. This pass lies at the altitude of 8859 ft.

Unique Quality: Canyon Campground is especially convenient for visiting the Canyon area, and Hayden Valley. Although not close by, this campground is also one of the better ones to explore Lamar Valley from. To reach the valley from Canyon, drive north from Canyon to Tower, then turn east, you will find yourself in Lamar Valley, which is a great place to look for wildlife, especially in the spring and fall. While camping in Canyon, be sure to visit the Canyon Visitor Center and its museum, the Upper Falls with its 109 foot drop, the Lower Falls with its 308 foot drop, as well as stopping at various pull out view points along the canyon drive. Also take the drive to Artist Point, where you will look into the canyon that drops 700 feet below you, and has a very scenic view of the Lower Falls. Don’t forget your camera!

Campgrounds

Well this isnt a usual tip about hotels, cottages or other stuff.. i mean my experience was a little bit different to normal habits. My expectations were to find a free place for me in a campsite but no way .. was mid september and it was full .. i checked Canyon Village and Norris sites and it was the same.. so what to do.. i wait till dusk and i park my car in the parking lot where i slept with no problem and with all the facilities open (restrooms with heating)
