A Great Hotel, From A Hotel Lover

Spent three nights there in April 05. My eyes roll to the back of my head when I think of their Sunday Brunch, so marvelous. (The Ritz in Boston is their only rival)
Loved the room (may have been haunted, things disappeared and reappeared, twice) The lobby bar was great and one walks out the door to the bustling Recoleta and off you go to see a delightful city- -the photo is my wife, doing just that...

Exceptional Hotel

The Alvear Palace has a right to its snobbiness. It is exceptional. The best amenities, most amazing cafes and bars, greatest location. The butler services are great, as well as the concierge. Very helpful staff. I didn't want to eat out anymore, the food was so amazing. That must be why everyone from BA eats here! The rooms are grand, and equipped with Hermes toiletries. Recoleta is a wonderful area to stay in Buenos Aires. You have Cartier across the street, and are next to Hermes. Just a 3 minute walk to an all day every day market, which displays amazing handmade creations. You can buy sweaters and all kinds of gorgeous gifts. This market is in front of a great art gallery, Two blocks from the mausoleum in which Evita is buried. The rooms start around $300. This is definately the most expensive hotel in BA but definately the best.

The Best Hotel in Latin America

I will admit right up front that I have not stayed here. Probably never will, unless I win the lottery. But friends of mine have, and I have heard nothing but positive reviews so far. And hey, let's face it, with prices like these, the rooms, services and amenities should be perfect, and I hear they are.

The hotel took 10 years to build and was finished in 1928. The architects Valentin Brodsky and Estanislao Piravano designed it. It was remodeled in 1930, again in 1960 and most recently in 1990. The materials used to build the hotel were brought from France. Throughout history, hundreds of important people from all over the world have stayed here. From regular rooms to the Presidential suite, you would be hard pressed to find flaws with either service or amenities. Consistently named Central and South America's best hotel year after year. The restaurants L'Orangerie and Jardin D'Hiver are open every day.

Satisfaction ratings were based on reviews from close friends and associates.

Best Hotel at the Best Location

The Alvear Palace Hotel is the most traditional hotel in Buenos Aires along with the Marriott Plaza. It opened in 1932 in the best area of Recoleta, the most refined neighborhood of Buenos Aires. It is only 5 minutes away from the business district but far enough to avoid its frenzy atmosphere.

Rooms and decoration are classic and stylish. If you prefer modern hotels look elsewhere.

Unique Quality: Superb service and perfect location. Member of the Leading Hotels in the World.

Hotel across from Hotel Alvear?

by rmdw

A friend of mine who has stayed in Buenos Aires before just sent me this: "My recommendation is to stay in either Recoleta or Belgrano. I seem to remember the Hotel Alvear==5****** hotel was right opposite the hotel we stayed at. I can't remember the name but it was a great value and a great place!"

Might this be enough information for someone to guess the name of the hotel?

Or are there other hotels in Recoleta that you can recommend for less than US$60 per night?

If you check out Frommer's, Fodor's and this website, you can find info about the cheaper hotels in Recoleta and other areas. The Wilton, Etoile, Dazzler are names which are thrown about on these websites. I also found a place called Lion D'or mentioned by someone here that looked like it might be OK and cheap. However, renting an apt. for a week in Recoleta/Belgrano/Palermo will be cheaper than $60 per night. Check out bytargentina.com for cheap rates and quick service. We are paying less than half that rate for a 3 bedroom place in Recoleta for a week.

Also, a friend lived in Belgrano and told me although its a nice area, its not as well located as some other areas. He said it was not uncommon to have to take a 40 min. taxi ride to get to some areas from there.
