This place definitely served my needs just fine. The reception desk was staffed by a mixture of middle aged, Spanish speakers and some younger college aged Portenos who loved to practice their English. Everyone was very helpful and willing to give restaurant suggestions and other advice. There is a small cafe right next door that has internet access and free breakfast for hotel guests.
My room was small, but fine. Cable TV was included and the large bed (which took up most of the floor space) was comfortable and clean. Maid service was impeccable and the bathroom had a roomy, hot shower and a toilet and bidet. No complaints from me.
Unique Quality: I even had them launder a few items and was surprised at how inexpensive it was.
Directions: Ayacucho and Pena in La Recoleta
I have now stayed four different times at Ayacucho Palace Hotel, first recommended to me by Lunita from VT. I had stayed before then at Crillon Hotel, Hotel Maipu, Howard Johnsons at calle Florida, more modest ones such as Waldorf, Nuevo Mundial and Gran Hotel Hispano. Whie you are in Buenos Aires there is very little chance you would be spending much time inside.. but the friendly greetings and a cheery breakfast room does help. Room are adequate and there is TV, phone, heater and bathroom.. the usual stuff
Unique Quality: It is in Ricoleta. The people at the office are very friendly especially Leo who works the night and his girlfriend who waits with him sometimes until late at night...Leo is friendly with Diego down the road who has an internet place..
69 argentine peso 23 usd single and 88 argentine peso 29 usd double including breakfast. take the bus manual tienda leon from the airort and they would deliver you to the front of the hotel

ayacucho street crosses it
I would recommend this hotel as a budget hotel. No frills. Rooms with air conditioning and full bath are a good size. I was there in Dec. 2004 and got a $40/day rate incl. tax & breakfast.
Unique Quality: No views, but great neighborhood. Walking distance to cemetary (5mins.) and restaurants, shopping on Sante Fe.
I would never recommend this hotel to anyone for any reason, unless of course I was making a recommendation to an enemy.
I found two problems with their website, 1) it says the rooms have internet. They have wifi in the lobby/restaurant only. 2) they ask for your credit card information on an unsecure page.
That however is nothing (though both good reasons not to stay at the Ayacucho Palace Hotel. At 1 am on Feb 13, 2008, we were awoken from a sound sleep by the very loud sounds of sawing, heavy duty construction work.
Now, I could understand if there was some emergency, or if it was something outside the hotel. However, the hotel on their website, claims they are "away from the noise," yet hire working to do construction work inside the hotel at 1am.
From my home page you can find youtube videos with both the construction noise and my conversation with the manager, which basically didn't care and stated it he was "not responsible".
During breakfast I was told we would get a refund. When it came time to get a refund, no dice! (Except for the following night that had been prepaid). So we got to pay almost US$100 to have a completely unforgivable experience.
Unique Quality: Extremely loud at 1am. This may be a special luxury you can't find in any other hotel at any price
