Yerba Mate Cup

by napacab62

Hello everyone! I was in Buenos Aires in January and had some mate with some friends. The mate cup was a plastic rubbery material. I have been searching to purchase a cup like this with no success. The cup was purchased in the design center in Recoleta. Would anyone know where I could purchase such a cup? Thanks!

Hola Napa :o)

You can find a good "Mate Cup" anywhere in Buenos aires...even in the Supermarket. They are made in several different material. Wood, Calabaza (which is NOT plastic, Plata...there are some in glass inside as well but they are not the classic ones...In San Telmo or at the Feria de los Mataderos (Sunday) they can personalized them with your name or something else. http://buenosaires.giorgioshouse.com/b&b_buenos_aires_000011.htm Saludos y buon Mate ;o)

Hi,
You can find a mate cup everywhere! In the street, in San Telmo market all the sundays for example.
I bought one there! it's not a plastic one, they were selling the mate cup in all kind of materials!!
wood, plastic, metal. You can create your own one, that the salesman is going to make in front of you!
It's cheap and have a very good quality!
This is where I bought mine,, but you can easily find one in the street!

just google yERBA MATE GOURDS and you'll find many of them sold also in USA and Canada.

Hispanic tiendas in the USA commonly carry bags of Argentine yerba, the mate cups, the mate thermos, and the metal straws (bombillas). Though the fancy, artistic varieties would be very hard to find.

Those cups are silicone. I don't know that you would find them outside Argentina. Plenty of 'puntos de venta', sales points, in BA. They might be able to post one to you.

there are several Argentinians in Miami/Seattle/NYC area, I'd say also Atlanta.
If you're going there, do a little search before to know where mate shops could be.

I am also a HUGE mate lover.

I was wondering if anybody knows of a big yerba company, factory, or even better a yerba mate farm, that people can visit.

thanks!

Usually most of the yerba Mate companies located in Misiones province have several tours...the one i know is Amanda. Or Taragüi. Try to search by the name of the companies, their plants. They usually are next to Iguazu Falls.

Travel Tips for Buenos Aires

Snacking

by leok

Feeling peckish and want to stave off hunger the Buenos Aires way?

All the small 'corner' shops have a wide range of snack food including what seems like hundreds of chocolate cake snacks as seen in the pic. Some contain merangue, some chocolate mousse, others biscuit or some other form of sweet yumminess. Once you've tried one it's really tempting to sample at least a couple of the others...

And if you want something hot ask for a 'super pancho' - Argentinian for hot dog. Nearly all the stores have them in a fridge and will dump the sausage in hot water for 5mins to heat it up before serving with sauce and sometimes potato crisps.

Plaza Colon

Among Casa Rosada located in plaza de Mayo and Puerto Madero this huge square split in two areas this part of the city... its a crowded area with lot of traffic in each direction ,,be careful crossing !!!

For Argentina's culture this place is so important.
This is an elegant neighbourhood with its famous cemetery, the colonial church of Nuestra Señora del Pilar, and the nearby cultural and commercial centre.

Fruit and Craft Market (disappointing)

by vtveen

After visiting the Rio Parana delta by boat, we had some time to spend in Tigre and decided to visit the 'Puerto de Frutos'. We walked from the wharf to this fruit market and passed the railway station of the Tren de la Costa.

Our visit - on a Monday afternoon - of the market was very diasappointing, because there were just a couple of shops open, mostly selling decorations and souvenirs and just two of them fruit. The whole area was more or less deserted during our (short) visit.

We were so disappointed that we even didn't make any pictures of the market.

If you intend to visit this markets be sure the shops/stands are open. Info Tourist Office Tigre: tel 4512-4497/4498 or e-mail info-m@tigre.gov.ar

Directions: Tigre is located 30 km's north west of Buenos Aires.
Accessible with the 'Tigre' train from the Retiro Railway Station, lanes 1 or 2 (50 minutes) or
by regular bus 60, leaving from Constucion ( 90 minutes).

jewelry hunters

by iam1wthee about .

On Libertad from Corrientes Ave up I noticed a lot of jewelry places there. I did not check the prices though.

Take the B train to Uruguay Ave and walk two blocks over towards Libertad

The area is extremely crowded and busy even in the middle of the afternoon

Not too many tourist here
