Would stay again

I just spent a week in Buenos Aires and stayed in the Hotel Etoile. The room was large with a private balcony and comfortable beds. The furniture was a little dated and the bathroom in need of repair. The fitness center also had very old equipment, but the view could not be beat while working out.

The staff was very helpful and readily arranged any tours I wanted to take. I asked them to arrange a day tour to Uruguay and they told me where to go to get a much better deal than what the hotel could offer. They saved me and my friend $200.00 dollars.

Unique Quality: The front of the hotel faces a park with the Recoleta Cemetary on the other side of the park. The hotel is not on a busy street which is really nice. There are many restaurants around the hotel as well. A couple of museums are easy walking distance as well as the Evita memorial.

Buenos Aires is a very dog friendly city and I enjoyed seeing all the dogs in the park. Be sure to look out for the dog walkers in the morning. You really don't need to look out for the dog walkers as it is very difficult to miss a person with a dozen dogs hanging off their belt.

More about Etoile Hotel

Recoletta Cemetery Etoile Hotel

by JenS21

another VT member suggested going to the 14th floor of the Etoile Hotel to see the Recoletta Cemetery from above...a great suggestion! The hotel is just across the street from the cemetery and easy to find.

Buenos Aires - Recoleta

by vtveen

Recoleta is one of the most distinguished areas of Buenos Aires and visited by a lot of tourists. Most of them come for the ‘must see’ Cemetery of Recoleta. But there are also a lot of art galleries and museums and Avenida Alvear is a shopping paradise with upscale shops. Plaza de Recoleta offers also shops and a food court, it is located close to the cemetery.

We had the best impression of the cemetery from a café on the 14th floor of Hotel Etoile, opposite the cemetery. We had a ‘café chico’ and a great view over the city and the Rio de la Plata. Just go inside the hotel and take the elevator to the café (did read this tip on VT !!).

The cemetery it self is like a small village with narrow streets surrounded by monuments, memorials, mausoleums and tombs of all kinds and sizes. At the entrance is a plan and it was easy to find the tomb of Eva Peron. As (almost) every visitor wants to visit at least this tomb.
The cemetery seems to be a tourist highlight, but when a funeral procession was passing by, we realised it is still a public cemetery.

Next to the cemetery is a small church: Basilica Nuestra Senora del Pilar. The church was built in 1732 and restored in 1930. Although small it has a great altar and some beautiful paintings.

City of the Dead

Recoleta is one of the most distinguished areas in Buenos Aires and visited by a lot of tourists. Most of them come for the ‘must see’ Cemetery of Recoleta. But there are also a lot of art galleries and museums and Avenida Alvear is a shopping paradise with upscale shops. Plaza de Recoleta offers shops and a food court and is located close to the cemetery.

We had the best impression of the cemetery from the 14th floor of Hotel Etoile, opposite the cemetery at the pedestrian mall Pte. RM Ortiz. During our first visit we had a ‘café chico’ (although during our last visit in 2009 we didn't notice the cafe any longer) and a great view over Recoleta Cemetery, the city and the Rio de la Plata. Just walk into the hotel and take the elevator to the 14th floor (did read this tip on VT !!).

The cemetery itself is like a small village with narrow streets surrounded by monuments, memorials, mausoleums and tombs of all kinds and sizes. It is amazing to realise there are almost 6500 mausoleums/tombs on such a small piece of earth. At the entrance is a plan and it was easy to find the tomb of Eva Peron. As (almost) every visitor wants to visit at least this tomb of the Duarte family.

We walked along some ‘streets’ of this city of the dead and it is surprising to see the different tombs and mausoleums with plaques on the walls, but also with flowering trees. The cemetery seems to be a tourist highlight, but when a funeral procession was passing by, we realised it is still a public cemetery.

Openinghours: daily from 8 am till 6 pm.

Etoile Hotel webpage is www.etoile.com.ar

It's not really a cozy hotel to stay. You may find much better places to stay.
i.e. Kempinski Park Plaza Hotel ,which is 5 blocks away from Etoile Hotel
http://www.parkplazahotels.com

The only remarkable thing about E H is that is placed in the most touristic area, with restaurants and cafes all around.

Cheers

got a recommendation from an argentina friend. a good (and cheep) hotel ... if you are not too demanding is the hotel recoleta:

http://www.bytargentina.com/re/proplist.php?CITY=715&typechoice=6&buscar=&ano_ing=&dia_ing=&mes_ing=&ano_sal=&dia_sal=&mes_sal=&apartmentclose=&neighborhood_id1=3&neighborhood_id2=0&neighborhood_id3=0&neighborhood_id4=0

if you want to have higher-budget accommodations, please follow the recommendation you got above.
