Hotels and tours in Buenos Aires and Santago

by CMKEATING

We will be arriving in BA on January 1st for a couple of nights before we board a cruise that will end in Santiago where we will spend a couple of days before returning home. We would like the following information about both cities: What area of the city is best to book a hotel? Can someone suggest a moderately priced hotel? We would prefer one that offers airport transfers if possible. We will appreciate any suggestions for tours, etc that might let us see the city in the short time that we have there. This is a very last minute trip. I booked it today, so I am desperately trying to wrap up arrangements. All help will be appreciated. I should tell you that my husband will celebrate his 83rd birthday on our cruise, so we don't take long hikes! :)

Check out my page on BA. We also had only a few days there at the end of our cruise. We stayed at the Claridge Hotel in downtown. There was lots to see within walking distance or a short taxi ride. We loved BA. Marvelous city. Make sure you see the cemetery where Eva Peron is buried. We flew home from Santiago so had no time there at all so can't advise you on that city. We thought the hotel was very reasonable and it was clean & comfy, although not fancy. They do have their own web site.

There are several hotels near the cruise ship dock in the Puerto Madero area, (we stayed at the Hilton, very nice) also the Recoleta neighborhood. They are an easy taxi ride away. The international airport is is a 30-45 minute ride away, depending on the traffic, so I don't think you'll find a hotel with shuttle service, but, again, it's very easy to get a taxi to the airport.

Travel Tips for Buenos Aires

Heart of the city

by acemj

The Obelisk is not only an incredibly recognizable icon of the city, it's also a great reference point as you visit the city on foot. I would often use it as a reference point as I was walking around the city. BA is full of interesting monuments and grand plazas and is very easy to navigate on foot, by cab or on the subway.

Plaza San Martin

by sof76

Plaza San Martin is next to Retiro (Train and bus station). This is where florida street starts.
José de San Martin's monument was built by Louis J. Aumas and it was inaugurated in 1862.

There are two charter comapanies that are cheaper than taxis and they are safe.

Hay dos empresas de charters que son más baratas que los taxis y además son seguras

Great books and music

by kalanialoha about Boutique del libro

A chain of stores with a great assortment of books and music, with friendly and helpful sales associates.

I was interested in buying "local" music, so the dj/salesperson gave me great recommendations of various artists and styles of music. He even let me listen to the cd's before purchasing.

The location I went to in Palermo Soho also has a cafe that serves tapas, cocktails, coffee drinks, etc. either indoors or outdoors in a covered patio setting. Free wifi service is offered as well. Great Argentinian music about $10 US for CDs, $3 US for a cocktail in the cafe
