Historic comfort in an excellent location
We were looking for a place to stay in Buenos Aires that would offer safe and easy options to explore on foot. BA is a world city, and it's a place that you can absolutely drop $800 a night for a hotel room if you want. We didn't "want". We zeroed in on this property because it was in Recoleta, one of the more fashionable parts of the city, and it was a 19th century mansion that had been converted into a hotel. We assumed - and were right - that we'd enjoy the historic gradeur.
What we didn't realize when we made the reservation was how VERY helpful and accommodating the hotel staff would be. The hotel is described (on their website) as being a boutique hotel, which to me can sometimes equal a bit of uppity attitude from the staff. Not so at the Marseilles des Anges.
I began an email correspondence with a fellow named Matías Turiaci, and it proved to be both valuable and pleasant. This fellow will answer all your questions, and gives excellent advice on all matters involving the traveller. I highly recommend that you specifically email him if you choose to make reservations with the Marseille des Anges. (see below for email addy)
Unique Quality: The qualities themselves aren't unique - they are abundantly available throughout BA. Comfort, Quiet, Convenience, Friendly Staff. What IS unique is finding such an excellent hotel at a bargain price of approximately US$145 per night in the heart of toney Recoleta. The location is incredible, a quiet side street a couple of blocks from the grand 9th of July Avenue. (about 16 lanes)
Opinion of Price: less expensive than average

We're going to be in Buenos Aires 23 and 24 January 2009 on a cruise. A number of us are interested in current information about leather jackets and other leather goods. Research shows the shop most recommended is Tarquino.
Is this still true or are there better places for quality and price.
Any information will be appreciated.

Re: Leather shopping

Hello Paul,
I was thinking of taking a boat down to Buenos Aires. May I ask from where you are departing ?
Is it a cruise type trip or are you sailing on a cargo ?
Thank you or your answer.

We're taking the Mariner of the Seas from Port Canaveral, Florida around the horn to Los Angeles departing 4 January for 46 days. We'll be in Buenos Aires just those 2 days.

Depends on your price range, Rossi y Caruso has outstanding leather goods. www.rossicaruso.com/

With so many leather shops in BsAs, you can find quality goods at competitive prices. It depends on what is important to you as far as quality and style.
The busy Florida didn't appeal to me for shopping. I don't like feeling drawn in by sellers. Much quieter is calle Murillo, where there are many shops but not the hectic scene. I've got directions to get there on a shopping tip on my BsAs page. It was easy by metro, but too far to walk from centro.
Travel Tips for Buenos Aires
A sensual city
by acemj
Yeah, Buenos Aires has an air of European sophistication, but it also has that typically South American passion and flair. You can see it in the fervor in which Portenos cheer on their favorite soccer club or hear it in a heated debate taking place in a corner cafe. The people here sometimes wear their emotions on their sleeves, which energizes the city and makes it a joy to visit.
Mate
by sof76
Mate is a very common herb we drink. There is a place where you can taste it 1½ block from my house. This place it's called Cumana. It's address is: Rodriguez Peña between Arenales and Santa Fe. There you have also typical food from Argentina. It's a very nice place. I am here with Mohsin, drinking mate at Cumana.
La Boca y River
by ncoutroulis
One of the all time great rivals is Boca and River (futbol). i was lucky enough to be able to see this game live, at Boca's stadium. It was one of the most intense things i've ever been to. It was scary, even, because the fans had to enter the stadium from seperate entrances, and stay separated throughout the entire game. you had to move into the stadium, by passing checkpoints, complete with cops in full riot gear. It was definitely an experience i won't soon forget. if you do go, be sure to wear neutral colors.
Wine shop
by cjg1 about Terroir
When in Buenos Aires I can say I always come here for my wine needs. This last trip I had to buy some from the duty free shop at EZE due to the carry on regulations but I usually try to get what I need here. Alex is a very good person to come see for this. He will take the time to help you find what best suits your needs and tastes and is quite well informed on the ins and outs of getting you and wine together both there and at home. Each year during Cow Do he also hosts a charity wine tasting where all the proceeds go to a local hospital. On my last trip we carried off 18 bottles of wine from Alex; some reds, whites and sparkling. We also purchased some bottles to keep in the apartment during our trip and some sparkling to take to the Falls later in the trip.
Plaza Francia at dusk
by DPando about Terraces
At dusk and summer time plaza francia and surroundings (recoleta neighbourhood are crowded with people in terraces and restaurants quite expensive for locals .. quite reasonable for us ... nice to walk among gardens and see traditional argentinian deserts stalls like "alfajores" extra sweet cake mixing cookie and dulce de leche
