Recommendations for special birthday celebration

by dogma505

Hello,
I would like to plan a special day/evening for my husbands birthday. It is a milestone birthday so I would like to do something in the city that is memorable. We are up for most anything, touristy, non touristy but special. Recommendations appreciated. We will be in the city in October. Thanks.

A tango show to round the day off would be have to be on your list. You can opt for big and glitzy or intimate and "authentic"

If your husband's a wine lover, how about a wine-tasting class with the at the very classy Hotel de Alvear's Caves de Vines? It taks an hour and showcases the best of Argentina's wines.

If the anniversary is in a Sunday you may consider going to a Futbol match in La Boca. But read a little bit regarding security aspects. There are some guided tours (it is more expensive but it include security aspects). Your husband may see the match in the middle of the fans...

If you are into Spanish culture, you might consider Cangas del Narcea. You'll have to book, though! You pay a fixed price and you'll get loads of food throughout the night: Spanish tortilla, rabbit, piglet, lamb, proscciuto, etc etc etc.
There's a show, hosted by the owner of the place who sings while drinking from a bota (very typical way of drinking wine in Spain, it's a leather container).

Just a thought! :)

Travel Tips for Buenos Aires

If you are in Buenos Aires on...

If you are in Buenos Aires on a Sunday morning and are a fan of flea markets you might as well visit the Flea Market of Plaza Dorrego in San Telmo as all the shops in Florida is porbably still closed. Plaza Dorrego is at the corner of Defensa and Humberto (see Map on the left of the word San Telmo). If you missed a tango performance in Florida you'd probably catch it here. Pictured on the left again is police watching over tourist and citizens. Many cafes line the outskirts. Barely visible but behind, a woman prepares for a tango performance.

Nao se pede licenca - No "excuse-me"

by dargains

People in Buenos Aires in general, and especially in crowded places, like discos, bars, and stores, donĂ½t say "excuse-me", the simpley push you away so that you get out of their way, so when you are do the same thing, nobody seems to mind.

Few things to always bring

by mrtourne

Leave space in your bags, at 3-1 ratio peso-dollar you can shop a long way here. I would suggest rubber soled shoes in Buenos Aires. Some sidewalks can be slippery, a lot are broken (which leads to the famous splash of water when you step on it). Plus there's plenty of dogs and noone picks after them. As far as clothing, go mid-season and you'll be fine. With the exception of August it's never really cold, but it can get very hot and very humid near the summer. Also, tuck in one of those rainjackets that folds into a pouch - rain storms can happen throughout the year and there is no definitely dry season. You can find pretty much anything in the local supermarkets, and of the same brands as abroad. Well, almost everything - I always have the hardest time finding decent floss, so bring enough (especially with all that steak you'll be eating). Razor blades are also pricey so bring from home. If your camera is APS / Advantix, bring film from abroad. It's not widely available in Argentina (you can find it in Buenos Aires, but at much greater cost). I also hold back from developing until I reach the US, due to cost. Bring some sunscreen in the summer, it's not cheap in Buenos Aires (a bottle of Hawaiian Tropic will run you 10 dollars) Alkaline batteries are also pricey, so bring enough along.

NUNCIATURA APOSTOLICA

Avenida Alvear is resplendent with magnificent old residences dating to the early 20th century. This home was never occupied, its owners preferring Europe to the Southern Cross. It was donated to the Vatican in 1949 to serve as its embassy here in Argentina.

BUENOS AIRES: LEATHER

by swesn about Leather

Tourists usually get accosted along Calle Florida by leather touts. I believe the prices there are much higher.

Walk along Avenida Corrientes to the area between Avenida Callao and Avenida Pueyrredon. You should be able to find shops selling leather goods, like wallets, belts, etc... that are reasonably-priced. Leather goods
