Old Meets New
by mannymiami
This was a pretty intresting building we came across , it was the front part of a building that must had been over a hundred years old and in the back they constructed a new skyscraper. I think this was a fantastic idea so that the old building wasnt torn down. It was located across the plaza on the backside of the National Theatre , a block off Avenida 9 de Julio.
All the news

Readers of English can get their fix of international and local news daily with the Buenos Aires Herald. Founded by a Scottish immigrant, William Cathcart, in 1876 as a weekly journal, its original purpose was to publish mainly shipping news and, like the Times in London, had only advertisements on the front page. Cathcart sold the paper after a year and the new owner changed from from a weekly to a daily newspaper and, at the same time, moved towards news and current event coverage and comment both in Argentina and abroad. It has been in print ever since.
Whilst no doorstop, the paper's coverage of both national and international news is pretty good and there is always sport, business, political and entertainment coverage as well features and comment on a wide variety of topics, including the shipping news - Cathcart would be pleased.
During the years of the military dictatorship, it was one of very few newspapers to publish reports of the kidnappings, torture and death that were being perpetrated.
It's widely read, and not only by the English-speaking community. It's also a good source of information about cinema times, theatre performances, polo match times, etc.

A European-like urban shopping experience
by AKtravelers about Calle Florida (Florida street)
Calle Florida in the older section of Buenos Aires is a pedestrian only area lined with shops, cafes and restaurants. Anything you want to buy in B.A. you can get here. Here I bought a box of Havana Alfajores to take back to the office, on the advice that they were a typical Argentine product. Leather is also a good deal, and John went hog wild buying leater gifts for his wife (probably made from the entire cows we ate the night before!).
Decadence in Puerto Madero
by vtnyc about Faena Hotel Bar
One friend told me that when he was single, to go out to nice places in Manhattan he would sit at the bar and have drinks with his date and possibly an appetizer. This way they both won. He didn't break his wallet to go to places like the Waldorf or Four Seasons and she got to say she went to prestigious places.
This is one strategy you can use to go to the Faena. Over 100 million dollars (US) was invested into this hotel designed in collaboration between Alan Faena who is an Argentine fashion designer and Phillip Starck.
We had a mini VT meet here on a Wednesday night. A glass of Malbec was about 18 pesos and we ordered a tray of 10 argentine cheeses for 54 pesos. We did not eat in the restaurant, but we did eat the cheese in the indoor lounge next to the pool. The cheeses were delicious when coupled with the local jelly they served us.
While the decor was nice, the music (IMHO) left something to be desired. Frank Sinatra is good for a few songs, but for a few hours? They definitely didn't have electro/trance/house music booming here. I wouldn't recommend sneakers on a guy or girl
