Pretty Nice Place to Kill Some Time
After a few cold, windy, rainy days in Necochea, we hoped Villa Gesell would be better. It was! It was everything that Necochea was not.
We had nice weather, people on the beach, most of the stores were open for the season, decent restaurants, lots of hotels and the town itself was pretty and inviting.
We bused in from Necochea via Mar del Plata. From the main highway, the road into town was dirt, which was a little surprising. It passed through sand dunes covered with brush and trees. We saw several beautifully colored birds which delighted us.
The bus terminal was on the south end of the town. A single taxi was available at the station, so we headed to a hotel which Lonely
Planet indicated was open that time of year (naturally it wasnt). Our driver drove us around until we found a very nice place to stay.
'Villa' has a long sandy beach which even at that time of year was getting some use. The town is very long as it stretches along the coastline. We had no idea where "El Centro" might be, because we passed through several places from the bus station to our hotel that could have qualified. The residential areas had numerous nice upscale houses and lots of trees and flowers.
Being into gardening, my wife and I noticed many plants that we were familiar with. Pines, weeping willows, poplars, bird of paradise, hydrangia, verbena, lavender, to name but a few. It reminded us a lot of the central coast of California.
On the beachfront, we saw some seagulls with black heads. Something new for us. The street along the beach was sand and along one side was a long boardwalk. Some of this wooden structure was raised several feet above the street (must be a real blowing sand problem).
The town is big enough to support a lot of shops for tourists, internet places, childrens arcades, candy shops, etc. Plenty of hotels and restaurants and cafes. I broke my glasses but got them repaired for free at an optical shop. Can't beat that!
We found ourselves liking Villa a lot. Would have loved to have been able to go out of town and done some birdwatching. Maybe next time.
