Hosteria La Granja - Huacalera: Betty's land
"Hosteria La Granja" is a cheap and very well located inn in Huacalera, Jujuy. The rooms are simple and clean. Overall, the hostel lacks maintenance, but with Betty Ribotta attention, everything is solved.
The breakfasts are American type, and whether Betty will cook for you for dinner, you will enter in a world of excellence at a great price.

Tilcara, Cerro Chico: stunning views
Cerro Chico (“Boy Hill”) is a bungalow style hotel located outside the town of Tilcara. Although it is ‘just’ 2 km’s from the town center it took quite a time driving this ‘worst’ Argentinean road we ever have seen. But with some patience (and you are on holiday) it is doable. Especially at night when it is absolutely dark outside without any street lighting, it can be quite a challenge.
Our reward was a paradise-like place with really stunning views over the valley of the Rio Grande and the high mountains of the Andes; second morning even with snow capped. Don’t forget you are already on an altitude of about 2.500 meters !! We had ‘bungalow’ number 1, which is the closest to the main building with the reception desk, lounge, restaurant and car park. On the premises is also a swimming pool (which we didn’t use) and two llama’s are walking around.
The room itself is quite basic, but has some nice local decorations, a bathroom ensuite and folding doors to a small terrace with two deck chairs. Just after our arrival we had a custom made lunch on our terrace in the lovely sunshine with these great views of the mountains.
Breakfast was very good and served buffet style with bread, croissants, jams, tea, fresh orange juice and yoghurt. The first evening, being not keen to drive to Tilcara, we had diner at Cerro Chico, which is offered to the guests. There was not much choice and it was by far not the best meal we had in northwest Argentina (second night we went to town).
(Just this meal is the reason I don’t rate Cerro Chico not with “A Great Experience”.)
Staff is very friendly and helpful. The French owner “Nour” - the hotel is also known as “lode Francés” (home of the Frenchman) - who is living many years in the province, does know a lot about the region and had some tips (for instance about the pucará of Juella) for sights to visit. He also helped us checking flights and printing boarding passes for our flight back home.
Unique Quality: Affordable luxury.
Great views and quietness.
Very friendly and helpful staff.

Purmamarca - Hostal Posta de Purmamarca: nice stay
We were welcomed by an employee speaking German, which was quite a surprise in this part of the world; for us Dutchies quite convenient during our two days stay.
Hostal Posta de Purmamarca is a nice charming bungalow style hotel. Rooms are situated in a couple of blocks. We had one facing the covered car parking with a lot of space in front of the room. Or better say rooms, because we had a bungalow with two bed rooms; we used one of them for sitting/luggage room. There was also a nice ensuite bathroom with all the amenities.
We took a bench from another bungalow (not occupied), so we could sit outside. It is just a pity the management hasn’t done more with the space between the bungalows than just putting some gravel around.
After an excellent night’s rest, breakfast was served in the central restaurant (only for breakfast), next to the reception desk. Breakfast was amazingly well done with toasted brown bread, fresh juice, yoghurt with fruit en all served on smart crockery.
Hostal Posta de Purmamarca is located at the end of the village nearby and with views of the ‘Cerro de Siete Colores’ (Seven Colours Hill). But still not too far away from ‘everything’ and walking to the main square and restaurants will take about five minutes. Even in the night, when it is quite dark in town we felt absolutely safe walking around.

Jujuy, Rincon del Valle: we loved the hospitality
The neighborhood is not the most inviting you can imagine, the service road to the B&B is unpaved and bumpy and the accommodation itself is hidden behind a wall and a sturdy gate. But once we had parked our car inside, we felt immediately at home by the warm welcome with some hugs by Pablo, the owner of Rincon del Valle.
He showed us his home and we opted for a room downstairs next to the living room and kitchen and had a view of the garden. The room itself has a wall of rocks (as the whole house is constructed with local materials), was quite spacious and had a bathroom ensuite.
We could use everything we needed with the slogan: “our home is your home”.
We decided to have dinner ‘at home’ and were happy we did, as we were not too impressed by the city of Jujuy. We had a homemade, by Pablo’s wife Andrea, ravioli; a very tasteful meal, together with a bottle of wine which bought Pablo especially for us. Of course it turned out to be very affordable; for two dinners we paid only 36 pesos !!
We had a very pleasant evening, talking with daughter Lucia and Pablo and some other guests. Pablo and Lucia tried to do their best to speak English if possible; sometimes we had to use gestures and signs. We heard the family started this B&B during the economic crisis of 2001 to earn some money.
Breakfast the next morning was again made by Andrea with fresh baked bread, homemade jam and served by their children. It was a nice start of the day. Although we just slept for one night we really felt home and took leave of this very friendly people with a kiss and a hug.
Unique Quality: The warmth and hospitality of the family.
Very affordable.

MALKA: A perfect location in Tilcara
Friendly owners, but importantly, superb accomodation, 5 beds to a cabanas, with their own wood burning stove, kitchen, bathroom and patio. They are all situated on a hillside, with lovely trees, and really really friendly dogs that just beg to have stones thrown for them. It is not the cheapest place to stay, but it is worth it for that small semblance of luxury.
Unique Quality: Quite, lots of individual space, patio, friendly dogs!

Hotel Terma de Reyes: A Relaxing Spa
We stayed at the Hotel Termas de Reyes because lots of people have recommended it. This old spa has got a thermal source just next to it, so we enjoyed quite a few baths!
Food was very good and the people were just great. They kept on checking whether everything was doing fine and were available if we had a question.
The room was good, not immensely big but not small either, and it's got a nice view of the mountains. The only problem may be that it is 15 km distant of San Salvador de Jujuy, but you can get a cab at the reception and it won't be very expensive.
I'd certainly go back!
Unique Quality: The Hotel Termas de Reyes is a spa, so you can enjoy thermal baths while looking at the magnificent Andes mountains in a private room. Besides there's also a gym, also free of charge for guests. An open pool with thermal water is also available. Finally, you can also have a massage. My father did and he was very pleased with it.
There's one good restaurant and a snack bar, and at the lobby you'll find, besides some very comfy armchairs, an internet-connected computer free of charge.
