When I did my 1st travel by this road (1992), it were an exiting off the beaten track adventure. Today the chilean stage is paved at all. Advances on the argentine section have been noticed but works are not finished again.
Coming from San Pedro de Atacama, on the border are the new Argentine custom post offices, located now near the north shore of Jama salt flat(they were originally on Susques). Yo go ahead over a broad soft not paved road to cross over the Olaroz salt lake and after a short hillside section you reach Susques, a little simple old town with a pretty XVI century chapel.
The approaching to Purmamarca is by the impressive Lipan slope, running before beside the "Salinas Grandes" wide plateau. Giant cactus and a colored geology decorate the beauty mountain slopes palette.
Yet down, on Purmamarca, a nice colonial tasted town, the deep Humahuaca valley leads you, descending softly to the south, reaching San Salvador de Jujuy (200.000 hab, altitude 1.220 mts ASL).
Near the city (19 km to the W), the comfortable "Termas de Reyes" hotel offer you warm hotsprings and a peaceful environment to restore energies and have a nice rest.
