Huacalera
Huacalera is a tiny village in the Quebrada de Humahuaca, located about 16km north of Tilcara. The only thing to see in the village is the beautiful church, though, whether it's open or not is a matter of luck. When we cycled through here it was closed and I couldn't understand what the lady in the shop next door was telling me when I asked her when it would open.
Our bike-hire man in Tilcara told us the inside was well worth seeing, but that it and many other churches in the region are often closed because some of the treasures inside the churches have been stolen. One of Argentina's heroes, General Lavalle, is buried close to the church. The Tropic of Capricorn passes through Argentina 1km south of Huacalera, and it's probably this, rather than the church, that ensures a steady stream of visitors through the village.
