More about B&B Plaza Italia
Plaza Italia
by TripAdvisor Member lpChicago
We stayed at Plaza Italia in April 2007. We did a good amount of research prior to our travels so we expected a good experience at Plaza Italia. I have stayed at several B&Bs throughtout the world and this one has been one of the best. They exceeded our expectations repeatedly. My friends baggage got lost by the airline and Mercedes (one of the owners)even offered to pick it up. Javier (Mercedes' son) was a delight from the moment we met him. He even drove us into town to help us get cell phones activated. I highly recommend the wine tour with Javier. The B&B was clean and very charming. Breakfast was good and internet was available and the location was ideal. We highly recommend this place and would definitely stay again.
Great experience

We stayed at Plaza Italia April 2007 and enjoyed every minute there. It is located across from a beautiful plaza and steps away from wonderful restaurants, cafes, and shopping. Tito and Mercedes were great hosts, and the rooms are large and airy. Make sure to book a wine tour with Javier (their son)...it was our best day there and extremely enjoyable. We highly recommend this place.
"Felt like home"
by TripAdvisor Member MAS357
Plaza Italia was the most accomodating and welcoming place I have ever stayed at. I have never felt so at home away from home. It is only because of the friendly and charming family that lives there. It is run by a couple, Mercedes and Tito. They attend to any needs you may have and have many suggestions on what to do or where to eat in the area. Also, arrange ahead of time a wine tour with Javier, also part of the family. He will take you around to some of the best wineries of the area and can also give you local suggestions on what to do in the area. Overall, I would highly recommend Plaza Italia to anyone traveling through Mendoza. It is in a good location in the heart of the city, it is reasonably priced and the family can speak English...but most of all because the family is so welcoming and will make for a memorable stay. ~M. In all my travels I've never felt more at home

We stayed at the BB for 5 nights(we were snowed out of Chile) and this was the best place I've stayed in my limited travels around the world.
Mercedes and Tito were most helpful and very kind and hilarious to boot. We took the wine tour with Javier and had alot of fun.
If I recommended any place to stay in any of the traveling I've done it would be this place.
You must meet Mercedes

Plaza Italia B & B is run by the elegant Mercedes and her husband. Their son arranges tours of winerys. Don't miss sharing a glass of wine with Mercedes in the courtyard; she is one of the world's most beautiful and wise women.
What family doesn’t have minor flaws?!
by TripAdvisor Member bob_the_moo
Stayed here for a week and was welcomed in by the mother of the family that run the B&B, who was friendly and lively and was happy to let us rest after travel before doing anything like admin etc. This approach was continued by the rest of the family who were very helpful throughout – making suggestions for eating (that were all good), organising third party trips for us, helping us make bookings when our limited Spanish failed us etc. The day’s wine tasting was excellent and all the more enjoyable for them organising everything so we didn’t have to worry about the detail.
The room we were in was a good size and had an on-suite bathroom. The road was outside but it was pretty quiet and it is in a good location to be able to walk around the city easily.
It isn’t perfect and a few things did niggle – the doorbell can be heard in every room early in the morning, and the phone ringer the same but these minor things were vastly outweighed by the family atmosphere and feeling that you were being looked after as part of a family of guests.
Great introduction to Argentina
by TripAdvisor Member NTAAthens_GA
This is a very comfortable (great beds, friendly living areas) and welcoming place to get your bearings. We especially enjoyed the wine tour with Javier, who was a weath of information and insight into Argentine culture, in addition to providing us with excellent wines and food. It was worth every penny! The entire family went above and beyond what one would normally expect from hosts at a bed and breakfast to make us feel at home. Moreover, the B&B is well located - close to excellent restaurants, gelato cafes, and shopping. We will definitely return.
excellent choice

My wife and I stayed 2 nights at Plaza Italia in July. We had a wonderful time. The hosts and their son Javier were great. They offered us excellent tips on food and sight seeing around Mendoza. We also took a vineyard tour with Javier, which was excellent. We would not hestitate to stay again at Plaza Italia B&B if we make it back to Mendoza.
Wonderful, genuine people

It is truly amazing the level of customer service this family gives! Mercedes and Tito open their home to you with sincere generiosity. I started emailing their son, Javier, about 5 months before our arrival. I must have emailed him about 20 times before leaving for Argentina. He answered my emails so promptly and took the time to tell me information that I hadn't thought to ask but needed to know. I was so thankful for all his help and advice. When he met us at the airport, I felt as if I was a long lost relative coming for a visit. Everything at Plaza Italia was relaxed and comfortable. The location is superb and Javier's recommendations about the restaurants were terrific. We still rave about "Azafran". The wine tour day with Javier was great....we learned so much about the wines of Argentina.
This is a jewel of a place....I'm so glad I found it.

A Must Stay When Visiting Mendoza

I will make this very easy. If you are going to Mendoza, stay here. They are one of the best B&B's we have stayed at in South America.

Mendoza to Santiago by bike...
by bicycle_girl
Would this be feasible in a 2 weeks trip frame? Would it be possible to do at the end of October? What is the weather like in October?
Thanks! Kati

When I heard of a beautiful highway, I thought this is for me. By bike is the only way: I get car sick in a car or bus. so, why not? :-)
How many km from Mendoza to Santiago?
Thanks!

Looking at the map it seems to be about 150km - in a straight line.
The map is very flat so it looks easily acheivable in two weeks...
However, I guess the road is less flat which is always a problem when you're cycling!
I am very jealous - I look forward to seeing your diary for the trip.
Good luck and have a safe journey!

Thank you. Someone e-mailed me and told me it was 181 km. 2 days of it I guess- maybe more considering the elevation gain, altitude sickness. Then I get more time to explore around either the Argentina side or the Chile side.

Hi, I live in Mendoza and I can tell you that October can be a good time to cross by bike. Regarding the 180 km from Mendoza to Santiago, well, that's a bit far from the reality, I would say around 600-800km.

wow, 600-800 km is indeed a bit different. Is there accomodation on the way, or there is nothing at all? Thank you!

Stieven, I may decide to postpone and get 3 weeks in January if my boss will let me do that. That would allow be better weather, perhaps. But bicycle_girl also needs a holiday soon...
