Hi Beth,

Hiring a driver can be done, but usually the experience is slightly tainted with confusion and visiting low standard wineries.

To have a brilliant experience through the vineyards and up the andes, contact a company called "trout and wine" who do full day excursions and premium tours. We did one to Lujan last week and would highly recommend them.

To put your mind at rest if you're set on the idea, you can hire a remis (taxi) to take you around the wineries and up the andes when you get to Mendoza through your hotel reception.

Have a good trip!
Marie

Travel Tips for Mendoza

Ruta 7 - the best way to see the Andes

by Trekki

Mendoza's situation just close to the highest Andes region is ideal to start explorations of this gorgeous mountains.

You can do it either on your own, renting a car, or you do it organized, with one of the numerous agencies in Mendoza, which take you on this day trip to the Chile border and show you all the attractions on it's way - Los Penitentes (ski area), Puente del Inca (the famous old thermal spring and hotel), and finally the Cristo monument high on 3800 m.

On the way, they also stop to let you get a glimpse on Aconcagua - the highest mountain peak outside of Himalaya - 6959 m. The map shows you the location of Mendoza, and the most significant attractions on the way of ruta 7 to the border of Chile

Fly Fishing in Mendoza

by Kevinh23

Fly fishing in the Andes is quite an extraordinary experience, even if you suck like me! Either way, our guide caught plenty of fish and my Dad and I finally did too. It was a nice side adventure and to get up close and personal with the Andes Mountains was worth it all.

Laying under the sun at Independencia Square

by Gaspar&Floppy

It's the main plaza of Mendoza city, it's a beautiful place to visit during summer.
There you can see the artesan's fair, music shows, street artists' shows.
Independencia square it's a good place to meet with friends, lay under the sun, read a book, listen to people drumming, playing guitar, or even to do nothing!
There you can also see the big shield of Mendoza and the memorial of the fallen Army men in the Malvinas war and the beautiful central fountain.

Relaxing in the arcades of Parque San Martin

by Trekki

Parque San Martin is the biggest park in Mendoza, stretching out in it's west.

You can do a lot of things there, strolling around and explore it's inumerous plants and trees.

Or, just sit, relax, read and ovserve at the lake shore, under nice flowered arcades :-)

Iglesia de la Carrodilla

by andal13

"Carrodilla" es la deformación de "carrocilla", es decir, pequeña carroza. La Virgen de la Carrodilla es representada en una carroza llena de racimos de uva, y es la patrona de los vitivinicultores.

"Carrodilla" is the distortion of "carrocilla" or "carroza" (carriage). Virgen de la Carrodilla is represented on a carriage with racemes of grapes, and she is viticulturists' protector .
