Mendoza 7th- 10th February 2008

by omario25

Hey all

Am going to be in Mendoza between the 7th and the 10th of February 2008. Can anyone suggest me if there are any must do's and don'ts? Is it a place where you go just for the wine? As am not much of a winer lover. Would love to visit the Andes. Any trips availble from the city?

Regards,

Omar

Definitely take one of the trips up to Aconcogua, tallest peak in the Americas. Most trips stop at the Inca Bridge which is on the way, has lots of hot springs. Be sure and bring your swim suit and towel with you for a dip. There are many trips available so you might shop around. But you might try this one Aymara Tours, 9 de Julio 1023, 420 2064, www.aymara.com.ar, arranged two excursions, a half-day vineyard tour for $7.75 and a full-day bus ride into the Andes for $119.50.

There are many other activities as well from white water rafting, trekking, horseback riding etc. Check this link for some information and also see my travel pages and other VT'ers travel pages for Mendoza http://www.welcomeargentina.com/mendoza/index_i.html

Mendoza Tourist Information is very helpful in any way.
Either is you want to know something about the outdoor possibilities, about high mountain climbing, about tours in the Andes (up to Cristo Retendor), about farmstay (ecoturismo) or about bodega tours.

They have all different leaflets, brochures, catalogues, in english and spanish.

Bilingual staff.

Open daily from 9 am to 9 pm.
You can't miss it, it is on Garibaldi street, just where it meets with Av. San Martin.
Little house, built on the pavement.

Plaza Pedro del Castillo (Area Fundacional)

by msocolin

The city of Mendoza was fouded here, at the Pedro del Castillo square, in 1561. Civic, religious and social life developed around it, until 300 years later, in 1861, an earthquake destroyed the city.
Nowadays, in the square reside the Area Fundacional Museum and a fountain, both built in 1993. Near the fountain there's the entrance to the underground chamber, where you can see two old fountains.
The square also has a beautiful view of the mountains.

Up in the mountains tour!

One of the reasons I came to Mendoza was because it’s located at the foothill of Andes. Some of the mountains are gorgeous to see. In fact Aconcaqua is the hightest peak in America (6950m).

If you are into (hard) climbing you need almost 2 weeks (including acclimatization) with a professional guide. Of course you can go lower just for trecking. Have in mind that permit to the park costs 250pesos for treckers(7 days) and 1600pesos for climbers(20days) in high season and slightly cheaper in other periods.

Of course an organized bus tour to the mountains don’t go so high. Usually the mountain excursions by bus go along the Mendoza river and stop at the border with Chile (3800m) where you can see the famous monument Cristo Redentor. Although it was hot down in Mendoza up there the freezing air pushed to wear our jackets. What’s more the oxygen level was low so we walked slow. The view was amazing….

And everywhere on the route I could say stop to the driver for taking photos. Before the Cristo monument we had made several stops at some other areas like at Puente del Inca, the famous weird natural bridge (see separate tip) or Las Cuevas (where we had to eat a not so tasty lunch).

Along the way to the mountains I noticed some areas with houses inside big walls. They are houses of rich people that live there separate from the city for security reasons. There’s a big issue of course what kind of life their children have there, some of them never seen a local bus etc

I was confused with the mountains, in fact there are 3 rows of them, the first one is the lower and the oldest one. Aconcaqua is at the third the higher one and the newest one. Most of the time the bus goes along the river inside the valley, a big valley I think, it’s almost 250km! We passed through 14 tunnels and it was very funny because the argentinian people use to clap their hands every time they cross a tunnel for good luck! The only animals I noticed up there were some condors.
