Hotel Esturion Iguazu: Nice Digs in Puerto Iguazu

    Room Block from Poolside
    by Bwana_Brown
The 118-room, 4-star Esturion Hotel was selected for us by our internet tour organizer, Ripio Turismo, so we were picked up from the airport by our local tour operator, Cuenca del Plata, and promptly delivered to our accommodations. The hotel is located almost at the end of the streets in Puerto Iguazu, on the point of land where the Iguazu and Parana Rivers meet.

We liked the looks of the place as soon as we drove in through their big gate in the fenced-off hotel grounds. Nicely manicured grounds, clay tennis courts off to the side and a beautiful swimming pool at a lower elevation with colourful bougainvillea vines climbing the walls. It was looking good already!

Since we were pre-paid as part of the package deal, we never actually paid a room rate, but an internet site (details below) quotes their single and double rooms at about US$70. After a hot day walking around the national park at Iguazu Falls, we really enjoyed the pleasures of this hotel swimming pool!

    Room 350, our bed

There is so much to say about this hotel. First off let me open with it is 30 years old and is showing its age. Do not come here expecting 5 star luxury and a perfectly put together hotel. The real winner and why you want to come here is because of the view and how they treat SPG members.

From the moment you exit the taxi upon arrival there are people there offering you excellent service. Your bags will be taken by the bellhops and they will lead you to the check in counter. Here you’ll be welcomed by what seemed to average four members of the staff including a very visible manager as well as your first view of the falls.

As I am only SPG gold right now I booked the cheapest falls view room I could for our first paid night. Marcela who checked us in told us our room wasn’t quite ready yet but we could take our bags up and leave them there and in less than 20 minutes the housekeeping staff would be done. She seemed very happy to be giving us room 350. And we were very happy she did.

After sorting out our two reservations and getting us squared away our bellhop took us up to the 3rd floor, the top, and showed us our room just far enough from the elevators to be quiet but close enough to be close. The room itself was much more basic than I thought it would be but I do believe it to be one of the better rooms in the hotel.

As you walk into the room the door was on the left side of the end wall. This allows the bathroom to open up on your right and the room behind it to open to the right and out to the balcony. It appeared that every room in the hotel has a balcony and that some on the 2nd or 1st floor had LARGE balconies that extended out over the banquet hall. Complete with a large king bed and a chair or two the room was sparse but functional. Stone tile floors as are very typical in the warmer climates. But as we said before, oh the view!

This is the ultimate in location as the hotel is located inside the National Park. The trails run right out of the back of the hotel and you’re into the jungle near the falls immediately. Complete with signs about the illegality of feeding the monkeys.

The hotel restaurants and bars as well as the spa and other facilities are covered by specific tips.

I will be very hard pressed to stay anywhere else when I come back to the falls.

I did not stay there, but if you want to stay in the National Park, this is the option.

No me alojé allķ, pero si desean hospedarse en el Parque Nacional, ésta es la opción.

The building has curious a "typewriter shape"; from the front rooms you can see the falls; it has pool, restaurant, air conditioning, cable TV, safe box, smoke detector... even jungle and waterfalls!!!

El edificio tiene una curiosa forma de mįquina de escribir; desde las habitaciones del frente se ven las cataratas; tiene piscina, restaurante, aire acondicionado, TV cable, caja de seguridad, detector de humo... incluso jungla y cascadas!!!

  • Our Balcony View over Rio Iguazu Valley - Parque Nacional del Iguazł
    Our Balcony View over Rio
    Iguazu Valley
    by Bwana_Brown
The 2nd floor bedroom was spacious enough for our needs and also had a nice balcony with table and chair, giving us a view out to the Iguazu River. The bathroom was also adequate and, although all water was not working once when we returned from a trip, a call to maintenance had it flowing again in no time.

The air conditioning unit was just barely able to hold it's own in the summer heat, but it was enough to do the job. The mini-bar located in the fridge did not see much use. However, because the bar did not sell wine by the glass for our evening meals, it came in handy to keep our bottle of left-over white wine cold! The price of a whole bottle was A$20 (US$7) so in reality, about the same as a glass of wine in a fancy restaurant back home!

The hotel breakfast, also part of our package deal, was excellent with a great choice of fruits, pastries, cereals and so on. This room also served as their high quality restaurant for evening meals or you could order something at their lobby bar area which overlooked the swimming pool.

Located along a beautifully treed street, the hotel is only about a 10-15 minute walk from the heart of Puerto Iguazu. Staying in PI instead of at the posh Sheraton 20-km away at Iguazu Falls gives you more flexibility during the evenings to enjoy the nightlife of this friendly city.

The Old Hotel at Iguazu: Empty Verandahs

  • Empty Verandahs of the Old Hotel - Parque Nacional del Iguazł
    Empty Verandahs of the Old
    Hotel
    by Bwana_Brown
We detoured through the Old Hotel as we continued on our walk from the cataracts back to the Visitor Centre of the Parque Nacional, where we were to meet our taxi at a pre-arranged time.

It was nice to wander the empty verandahs and corridors of this now abandoned building, especially for the shade from the hot afternoon sun! We did not see anyone else there as we peered into rooms and explored the old building. I think some of the rooms may still be occasionally used for small meetings of groups of naturalists or the like, but I am not sure. One thing the tourist literature does mention is that, if you have an unfortunate encounter with a spider or snake, you should head to the First Aid Centre located in this old building as fast as you can!

We liked the old hotel - it reminded us of our long-past days in Africa. I hope that this amazing structure is preserved as part of Argentina's history. So far, it still seems to be in good shape.

    Approaching the Old Hotel from
    the New Sheraton
    by Bwana_Brown, 1 more photos
On our final day in Parque Nacional del Iguazu, when we were on our own to wander at our leisure, we walked back uphill from the Lower Circuit to the area of the new Sheraton hotel, the only accommodations actually located inside the National Park. Just a few hundred feet away from the modern Sheraton stands the original old hotel used by tourists when visiting this amazing display of cataracts.

There does not seem to be much information available on the history of this old colonial-style building, but it seems to be quite empty these days. The 2nd photo gives a closer view of the architecture that so appealed to us.

There is only one hotel inside the park, and the Sheraton Iguazu Falls is it. The hotel is quite nice looking but you definitely want to spend time in this hotel for its amazing view of the Falls.

We totally loved our room and althought they couldn't accommodate us with a king room (the hotel was completely booked), we did enjoy a beautiful fall view room. The bed was very comfortable with nice sheets and covers. The room had a nice small table with two chairs and complimentary fruits upon our arrival.

The hotel also has a wondeful swiming pool which we took advantage of on our first day's arrival, a great spa, lobbly lounge, some shops, a wonderful restaurant and great staff. Another great added advantage to this hotel is that is it located inside the park, so once you have paid the entrance fee to the park, doesn't matter how long your stay, you don't have to pay again.

The highlight of our stay was of course the balcony where we enjoyed breakfast one morning while gazing out to the falls in the distance.

The views of the falls is the top reason why anyone would stay here. Our room, a double was quite comfortable with all the amenities you want in a hotel, the bed and bedding allowed us a very comfortable night's sleep.

The pool was amazing, the water was perfect especially on a hot day. The restaurant although a bit pricey was quite nice and we have to complete the staff, which were quite nice and very accommodating as they feverishly tried their hardest to secure us a King room (albeit, something they were unable to do).

I would definitely stay here again, and you

  • Hotel pool from my balcony - Parque Nacional del Iguazł
    Hotel pool from my balcony

I stayed in Foz do Iguacu where there are far more options than in Puerto Iguazu in Argentina. However, there is a popular Sheraton right on the park grounds in Argentina, but the monetary difference between the price of the Sheraton and a good hotel in Brazil is greater than the cost of a Brazilian tourist Visa, so I'd suggest staying in Foz.

The Rafain was great. My room overlooked the swimming pool and had three beds (I only needed one, but that's okay), air-conditioning and cable TV. It also had a good shower and a big bathroom, although for some reason there was a small water leak that made the bathroom floor wet most of the time. There was a fridge in the room with water, soda and alcohol for really decent prices. The hotle also had a good restaurant, a bar, a nice pool and patio as well as a small workout room, an office with internet access (overpriced considering there were cheaper internet cafes within two blocks) and downstairs there was a pool table and ping pong tables.

Sheraton Iguazu: Hotel inside the National Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dabs

  • My understanding is that the Sheraton is the only hotel inside the National Park on the Argentine side, it's rather ugly on the outside butI hear it's very nice on the inside. I saw many recommendations for this hotel on travel boards and I imagine it has stunning views of the Falls. You are, however, inside the National Park and would likely have to patronize their restaurant for breakfast and dinner and their website mentions that there is ongoing construction.
