Macuco safari tour for my mother in Iguazu, Brazil

by sripod

Hi, I am currently visiting Brazil with my 65 year old mother. She can walk alright, but she cannot do heavy activities (has high BP). We did Devil´s throat and Upper circuit in Argentina. Is Macuco safari tour on the Brazil side rough? Is it a very high speed boat or is it just like a normal boat? Is it bumpy? I really appreciate any advise. Thanks very much.

The water can be a little bit rough, you're going very close to falls, it's a normal boat as the do not need high speed, for sure you'll get wet, bring a water proof bag for your camera, they have one given to you but it's very similar at one of supermarket.
The main concern for your mother could be high humidity and hot and this everywhere at Iguazu, a little bit more going to river thru the forest, when I did it there were old trucks for this transfer, nowdays it should be something more confortable.

Travel Tips for Puerto Iguazú

Tourist Information Centre

by vtveen

... not favorite ...

The office of the local tourist information centre is located at the main street Avenida Victoria Aguirre 369, close to the town centre.

The information we got was rather poor or inaccurate (they told us for instance we couldn’t pay with pesos at the bird park in Brazil, which turned out to be false) and the employees hardly speak English. We hadn’t expect this in such a major tourist centre.
They seemed to be touts trying to sell guided tours or to make an arrangement with a local taxi driver for your transportation.

So when visiting Puerto Iguazù, be sure what you want to do/see and what kind of transportation you want to use.

Brazilian side

by acemj

Hey, you've come this far- you might as well get the full experience of the falls and visit the Brazilian side. The views are more grandiose and panoramic and will give you an idea of the enormity and power that nature unleashes here at Iguazu.

Iguazu Falls

by Bwana_Brown

Of course, the real reason we went to Puerto Iguazu was to visit and experience the majesty of Iguazu Falls, about 20-km (13-miles) away on the border with Brazil.

The most majestic waterfalls in the world (and I have also seen Victoria Falls!) Iguazu is an amazing display of about 273 different cataracts on the 2.5 km wide Rio Iguazu. The most impressive of these for sheer power and volume of water is the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) where the main body of water plunges 270 feet into the gorge separating Brazil and Argentina. On other sections of the falls, the drop is broken into two separate levels of waterfalls, the Upper Circuit and the Lower Circuit.

The Argentine-side is the best place to actually experience the waterfalls, since a series of catwalks allow you to stand at the edge of the Devil's Throat as well as explore the other smaller falls from above, halfway down and at the bottom.

Because the entire series of waterfalls on the Argentine-side is encompassed by the Parque Nacional del Iguazu, trips are also available involving the surrounding rainforest.

The photo shows Sue and I on the edge of Garganta del Diablo. See my 'Parque Nacional del Iguazu' page for more details of the whole experience!

AR Iguazú IV - Isla - San Martín - Island

by elpariente

Once you reach the river you may visit San Martín Island . First they cross you the river in a boat and then you climb 180 steps up to the top where you have great views of the waterfalls , you may see in front of you the San Martín and Ventana falls

Puerto Iguazú

by msocolin

"The History"

Although the are now know as Puerto Iguazú, and the Iguazú Falls were discovered in the 16th century, the city of Puerto Iguazú was only founded in 1901 as Puerto Aguirre, after Victoria Aguirre.
Victoria Aguirre was a lady who tried to get to the Cataratas del Iguazú but for some reason couldn't make it. When she returned home she asked her father, a wealthy man, to donate money to build roads to get to the falls. It was 1901 when the construction of roads from Puerto Aguirre to the falls began.
In 1943 the city is renamed as Puerto Iguazú. In 1951 Iguazú is renamed as Eva Perón, and in 1955 it's renamed again to Iguazú.

"Puerto Iguazú Today"

Nowadays Puerto Iguazú is a small city of 40000 inhabitants, most of which make a living out of tourism. The city has many hotels, and some restaurants in the city center, but not much more.
